Comment:

I just recently inherited a new computer (still old by today's standards)
It's got a 2 gig hard drive, 32mb RAM, and a pentium processor (166 mhz)
I recieved it with loads of junk on it, so I formatted the hard drive, and did a clean install of win98. It worked OK, then I started noticing strange behavior after upgrading to IE6. It was as if nothing was updating (anti-virus, ftp client, IE, etc.)
I found a virus (through housecall) called JS_Loop.A A javascript virus which I didn't think was too serious.
Anyway, I re-formatted the harddrive to start clean again, and now I'm getting a message that says, "Windows 98 requires a computer with a math coprocessor." with an OK button that just takes me out of setup.
The computer came with win98, I installed it fine before, and now I can't. Please help.

I really don't want to bring out the old 20mb RAM/400Mb hard drive "dinosaur" I was using before. I know, I know, I need to upgrade anyway, but right now this is all I have. (plus it was all free anyway so it's worth a shot to fix.)

I would download a bootable floppy from www.bootdisk.com. File protect it to make sure that it doesn't pick up a virus. Boot it up and start from scratch. Repartition the drive, format, run 'scandisk /surface' and check the RAM:
Memtest86
http://www.teresaudio.com/memtest86/
or
Doc memory test
http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp

Then try another install.

where was the virus located when yit nwas found? If it was in the boot sector then you still have it. also if you want a good bootdisk for 98 and all OS's up to XPpro I got one I can send you in a couple of minutes. just click on my name and request it.

The virus was in a program file folder.
When I boot the computer, it's showing my coprocessor as "uninstalled", I went in to setup, and couldn't find anything for it. (I'm also not too experienced with CMOS and BIOS and all that jazz, so didn't want to screw it up worse.
I did try to install win95, and that seemed as though it will work, but I don't have a product key to complete it.
