There might be other problems, but things work fine unless I walk away for more than 3 minutes. My Norton Crash Deluxe must shut down Explorer to "fix" the unidentified problem. I can't find ANY program scheduled to auto run on inactivity. I don't have Power Management selected in the Award 4.51 bios, no auto virus scans, no screen savers, nothi g I can find in Sys or Win ini that explains it.
The Message reads: Explorer caused unknown exception in Webcheck.dll. I do have an UNWANTED IE5 Beta running and uninstallable. I came across "runtime erors" when trying to uninstall it. I also have VB5 installed.
My machine is a standard IBM Clone, 166mhz, 64 mgs RAM, running a Win 98 upgrade from OSR2.
I know that Webcheck DLL is used by IEMIGRAT.DLL, and is always used by runnung Windows. If I go to safe mode and delete it, will I be sorry?
Any help I can get will be appreciated greatly... EJL

I have been trying to solve the same problem. Mine didn't occur until I installed IE5. One item from the knowledge base said to upgrade Quarterdeck Clean Sweep to the latest edition.

Ditto for me... After I installed IE5, I got the same error. I still haven't gotten rid of the bug and it's driving me crazy. I don't know what to do! Maybe i'll try Clean Sweep. Keep me informed if anything new pops up!

Holy sh*t, I thought I was the only one!

I started right after I got the IE5 release, not with the beta.. It crashed my SimCity 3000, and even had my machine shut down all by itself.. I've got a AMD K6x2-300, with 64 meg RAM.. If Clean Sweep doesn't work, I'm going back to IE 4.01!

Same problems this weekend after installing
IE5 (4/4/99). The message comes up that Explorer will be closed down and when you hit
"close" most of the stuff in the system tray
disappears. Windows still operates, but you
feel it's like flying with a broken wing.

I dont have any virus programs running, or clean sweep or screen savers and I am having the same problem. And, it began immediatly after installing IE 5.0. ( final release)
I did some investigating and found that the webcheck.dll(dynamic link library) is directly linked with subscription updates.
Well hi-dee-ho..there does not seem to be a subscriptions option in 5.0.
The .dll file seems to be a remnant of 4.0.
And windows will not let me delete it.
Any suggestions appreciated.

I have been having the same problem since downloading IE 5.0. I found that I had an incomplete download and didn't get the updated WEBCHECK.DLL. Since I replaced that file, I have not had that problem. Hope this helps.

Will cleansweep work? Also to previous message ... I put the symantec fix in and problem still occurs with IE 5.0 It time for a new browser. Please respond to deleting the IE versions. 5-24

same problem but found the fix

this error is caused when ie5 didnt not install correctly mainly because of background running programs

webcheck is used by ie 5 even thou its from ie4

go to start-control panel and then add/remove programs
click on ie 5 and then click on add/remove
select the option to repair
have it repair it
if it cannot then reinstall ie 5
this is a problem caused when ie 5 does not install correctly
make sure that all background programs are shut down and only systray and explorer are running ( for people that dont know how to do this hit ctrl alt and del at the same time ,hightlight one at a time and click on end task Note: the windows dissapears after u end task an item u have to bring it back up after each end task,another window may come up that states the program is not responding hit end task again}

as for clean sweep get rid of it
this program causes soo many problems with windows 98 and 95 becuase of windows repairing features
we get an average of over 300 calls a week becuase clean sweep has corepted windows files example : user.exe vmm32.vxd and so on

instead od useing clean sweep use windows 98s
system file checker to check for damaged files
start-programs-accessories-system tools and then click on tools and then system file check
hope this helps

i bought another cd and reinstall ie5, till now there will be no problem anymore....thats alll....to check whether your copy is legal/illegal, do this
1. open your ie5
2. add to favorites
3. then try to sych.... if you'e been told to install the offline browse, then your copy is illegal...

Conspiracy theory no1.
I've found the problem dosen't occur if, after instaling IE5, you allow it to load the default page (IE5 new user tour) and accept all default vaules for first use.
Do remember they are out to get you!

I experienced the same problem after installing IE5. After reading the above responses, I found webcheck.dll (ver 4.72.3110.1) in my /windows/vcm and /windows/system directories. In my /windows/vcm directory I also found webcheck.000 which turned out to be ver 5.00.2014.200 of webcheck.dll. In DOS, I deleted the old versions of webcheck.dll and renamed webcheck.000 to webcheck.dll and also copied it to my /windows/system directory. SO FAR -- SO GOOD.

Second time I've hit this problem, this time it appeared after I installed Norton 4.0. The oddest thing was -- I don't have webcheck.dll except in my /system/backup directory, so whey there was a crash is beyond me. So I deleted it anyway... hopefully the crash will go away again.

I didn't have a problem with crashes, however I learned that webcheck.dll is loaded during Windows startup. I went into DOD mode and renamed the file to webcheck.dl_ and have had not problems (a few weeks now). I prefer to rename rather than delete because it is usually easier to undo if the results are not what I hope for. try http://www.iconlabs.net for a couple of interesting pieces of software (including ps95 which shows more about what is running in the background than anything else I have seen personally, and lets you kill any process you want to).

Well, I have had the inactivity problem
for the past week and
just recently purchased a Dell XPS 400
(meaning I've been on the phone with the
tech support people about this problem
for about 20 hours)...

Finally, I got a tech support person
who agreed w/ me and only after I read this board then,
checked MS's Knowledge Base...

The WEBCHECK.DLL is the problem... the file
is a Support file for the IE channels..

From the MS KB

"Enables a client program to control the subscription manager"
for Internet Explorer

After backing up the files on a diskette
from folders,
c:\windows\system and
c:\windows\vcm

I deleted the WEBCHECK.DLL from the DOS prompt from both folders...

It has been several days since I deleted the
files and my system has not crashed since.

BTW, I would like to THANK every1 who posted on this forum.
Because, it started the bread crumb trail I needed to resolve
the problem I was having...

MS UPDATES or Norton Updates the updates stop
or freeze up.Inactivity also brings the notice up. I don't know if it caused it or not, but I was forced to safe mode.I had a time getting the advance mode to work again.

Suggestion, when you want to rename something. Change the extension to *.zzz, if you need to find it, all you have to do is search for that extension. Thanks for the tips on webcheck. I installed the browser from my isp's CD, hopefully that will take care of the problem.

Just go to Yahoo, and search for FTP Search. Use one of the FTP search engines and find the file!

I have done this on the Win98 sys - replaced the damn dll - no probs. Deleted it on Win95 - no probs.

Works with MS Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools
1. Check to make sure your have the following files in C:\WINDOWS\VCM
cdfiew.dll pngfilt.dll
jsproxy.dll webcheck.dll
licmgr10.dll
msidle.dll
2. If you do, the same files reside in
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM which are out of date. Reboot into the DOS mode and delete these files from C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.
3. Restart Windows and then go to C:\WINDOWS\VCM thru Explorer or File Manager and select the same files from there and copy them into C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.
4. Then go to the Control Panel to the Add/Remove Programs and try to remove Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools. A Menu will come up and on there will be "Repair Internet Explorer". Click on that and let it do it's thing.
5. After that, you will have no problems.
NOTE: IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME, TRY FIRST TO REMOVE INTERNET EXPLORER 5 AND TOOLS FROM THE ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM AND TELL IT TO "REPAIR INTERNET EXPLORER". IT WILL TELL YOU THAT THE SAME FILES LISTED IN STEP ONE ARE NOT THE RIGHT VERSIONS.
6. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT.

I have a Windows 95 machine and it is doing this same thing. I upgraded my @home software to ver 1.7 from 1.6 and this is when this problem started happening. Should I delete or rename the webcheck.dll file as well to resolve my problem?

IE version 5.01 is now available for download on the the microsoft homepage. I did that ran reinstall and my webcheck.dll error message is gone. This should update all necessary files. A lot easier than trying to delete all files causing a problem.

At the risk of making yet another "this happens to me too!" post, I'd like to say that I got this error message after a clean install of Win98 following a full format of my main drive. The problem occurred after installing MS Office 2000 Pro, which brought with it IE5. Thus, it is clear that this is a problem with the Miscrosoft installer. I am removing the registry keys that refer to webcheck.dll and am renaming webcheck.dll to webcheck.dl_, as suggested. I will post here if there are any adverse effects.

NICE N SIMPLE!!! FIRST FIND
"FIX IE5 LOG"
IT SHOULD BE ON YOUR DRIVE SOMEWHERE NEXT LOOK FOR
ANY ERRORS THAT TEXT FILE MIGHT SAY IN IT!!!
WHEN YOU FIND THEM TAKE
NOTE AND FIND THE ERROR'D FILES ON YOUR DRIVE NEXT CHECK
TO SEE WHAT VERSION THEY ARE, IF THEY HAVE VERSION
NUMBER STARTS WITH 4 THEN THE FILE MIGHT BE OUTDATED
BUT JUST TO MAKE SURE LOOK FOR THE SAME FILE ON YOUR
DRIVE, IF YOU FIND MORE THEN ONE, CHECK TO SEE WHICH IS
NEWER VERSION, VERSION STARTING WITH 4 WOULD BE
OUTDATED. DEPENDING ON HOW YOUR SYSTEM IS CONFIGURED
BUT IF YOU SAW THAT SAME FILE NAME WITH AN ERROR ON THE
TEXT FILE "FIX IE5 LOG", THEN REPLACE IT (ON MY FILES I FOUND
VERSION NUMBER STARTING WITH 5 IS NEWER THEN VERSION
NUMBER STARTING WITH 4) BUT THAT WOULD VARIE, BUT NEWER
VERSION FILE SHOULD BE THE ONE NEEDED. IF ANY PROBLEMS
DELETING FILE "WEBCHECK.DLL" RESTART YOUR COMPUTER IN
DOS MODE AND WHEN YOU SEE

C:\WINDOWS>

THEN TYPE IN THEN TYPE IN EXACTLY WHAT YOU SEE BELLOW
STARTING FROM WORD "DEL" ALL THE WAY TO "DLL"

DEL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WEBCHECK.DLL

NOTE!!!!!!! TYPE WORDS EXACTLY!!!! YOU DO THIS OPERATION AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!
I DID THIS ON MY COMPUTER AND EVERYTHING WORKED OUT FINE
NOT ONLY FIXED THE WEBCHECK DIALOGS BUT ALSO FIXED OTHER
BUGS. I HAVE WINDOWS 98 WITH INTERNET EXPLORER5, I THINK THE
PROBLEM HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH INTERNET EPLORER5 NOT
HAVING THE UPDATED FILES IT NEEDS,BUT WHO KNOWS BUT IF THIS DOESNT APPLY
TO YOU THEN MAYBE THIS FILE REPLACEMENT ISNT FOR YOU!!!

After reading some of the solutions here's what I did. First I backed up webcheck.dll out of c:\windows/system on to floppy or different directory. Then I restarted in msdos mode, and deleted webcheck.dll out of c:\windows/system directory, then exit out of msdos mode to Windows. So far works great.

Man...
This is a wierd one. I should preface this by saying that I have a degree in Computer Information Systems, I'm a VB programmer and I'm a certified computer technician. I still don't know why the hell this happened.

The machine that was bombing was an INTR*A*net machine without ANY web browser, and it happened after I installed software that I developed MYSELF. I built the install with the InstallShield 2.12 setup builder. There was one file that failed to self register (but like an idiot, I didn't write the name down), and it started having the problem shortly thereafter.

The software I installed has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with any internet/web connectivity WHATSOEVER.

The only thing I can think of is that all of the products that have been mentioned that, when installed, cause Windows to do this were installed by InstallShield. Maybe it's an install shield problem, and not an IE5/CleanSweep/Norton problem afterall.

There were no files in the windows\vcm directory, so there were no conflicts. I just renamed the file from webcheck.dll to webchkxx.xxx in the windows\system directory and that seems to be working so far. I haven't seen any adverse effects yet.

Hope this helps somebody.

Hi....

I found the solution. How?
Go to the original files of the IE5 there is a file called ***** open it. You will find WEBCHECK.DLL file, now extract it. Go to the DOS mode, and copy the file you extracted to the directory "WINDOWS\SYSTEM" (may change from machine to machine).

This way works perfect with me, no problem at all.

I encountered this problem a week or so ago after doing a fresh reinstallation of Win98 on a freshly formated drive. No Beta's, iffy software, or warez were intalled yet, just the Win98 files from the Win98 disk that shipped with my Gateway computer.

I fixed the problem by deleting the webcheck.dll from my windows/system directory. After consulting the MS Knowledge Base, I learned that this library is used for the "subscription" feature of IE's favourites. If you don't use the subscription feature, just delete the file and your problems will be solved.

How to delete webcheck.dll:
Click start>Shutdown, then select the "restart in MS Dos mode" button, then click ok.
Once you see the C:/Windows prompt, type in:
del c:\windows\system\webcheck.dll
If you type it in correctly it will appear to do nothing except put you back to the c:\windows prompt. If it gives any error statement, try it again.
Now just type in:
win
The win command will boot you back into windows. Your problem is solved! Good luck.

i have the same problem but with the program Explorer . i tried many things like re-installing IE 5 and the all Windows in my same system but for nothing . i tried also Dr . Watson to define the problem , but it mentiend to disable the language detector . but for nothing .
i asked some expert about that , the solution is could be reinstalling the IE 5 but without any other applecation running with the installation program , which confelcts with other programs in the systray . so end all tasks except expolrer and systray and reinstall IE .
thank .
and plz reaply if that solution works .

The Solution!
ok here you go:
Invalid page fault in Webcheck.dll
If you're using Internet Explorer 5 or 5.01 and get an invalid page fault in Webcheck.dll, this is almost always due to the fact that your Webcheck.dll is left over from your previous version of Internet Explorer. You can download the right version for IE5 here(http://www.windowstrouble.com/dl/Webcheck.zip), but first go to C:\Windows\System\Webcheck.dll, right-click the file, click Properties and the Version tab. The download will only make sense if your version number is lower than 5.00.2614.3500

Installing the new file will be difficult in Windows, because the old Webcheck.dll will probably be in use, so you won't be able to overwrite it. Here's how to do it:

1) Restart your computer in DOS mode.

2) For safety, rename the old Webcheck.dll. Type the following command and press Enter:

ren c:\windows\system\webcheck.dll webcheck.old

3) If you unzipped and saved Webcheck.dll to C:\unzipped\webcheck, for instance, you should type the following command:

copy c:\unzipped\webcheck\webcheck.dll c:\windows\system /Y

After pressing Enter, you're ready and you can restart Windows (just type WIN at the prompt and press Enter).

Oh and by the way. If you ever lose your system tray icons, which you usually do when Explorer crashes for whatever reason, there's a nifty little free program which you can download from: http://www.mlin.net/TraySaver.shtml
It will automatically bring back your icons after a crash.

Another goodie and a freebie is Startup Cop which lets you have a look at the windows startup program list on your computer. I had three programs in there which I had deleted or so I thought some six months ago. My computer was going as slow you know what but this program lets you suspend their operation in the background and now my processor is flying. You can download it from Znet.co.uk
