go to run line
type in

run the system file checker for corrupt files.
you must have a win98 disk to repair any corrupt files

Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and post back the programs that are running.

Drop your RAM to 256 or so and see if that helps.

I'm just reviewing postings for older problems. Thought I'd comment here or there on things that might be relevant to those who meander these halls in future.

A "hanging" computer can have so many different problems it's rather unbelievable. Virus? Zombieware? Malware?

One thing that often causes a PC to react in this manner is: Heat. Open the casing and blow out some seriously accumulated dust, if it's there.

Don't do what I did: lose a processor to dust. A small bird's nest formed under a fan on top of the "heat sink" and allowed a Pentium III chip to roast itself alive. :-(

Keep the interior of the physical box clean and your machine will run well for years. :-)
