A guy down below mentioned this as his problem and the reply asked for more info. I don't know what info you need here, I don't have anything extra installed except for what has been burnt in, it's a compaq presario 5528.

The only things hooked up are the CDrom, keyboard, mouse, Hard Drive, and built-in 14.4 modem that cannot be removed. There is a sound card as well, but I think it's hooked up to the motherboard also.

Unfortunately, the monitor is integrated and even safe mode doesn't come up. You can imagine my frustration as my once worthwhile computer cannot run win98. I tried to go back and use win95 and I get the same exact error as well.

Any advice via an email would be greatly appreciated.

I've encountered this problem before, it turned out to be the processor. After changing the processor the machine worked fine. Hope this helps.

After my computer crashed for some unknown reason after running ok for about year I reformatted FDISK etc and loaded only w98 and then reinstalled my isdn modem with AOL. Now I have this configmg problem. Someone said I should take out and then reinstall AOL. But frankly I think after all the problems I have had in the last 5 years I should take up golf. However I will give it one more try if someone can tell me how to eliminate this problem. I know who I would prefer to eliminate!

This indicates an L2 cache initialization error. You can either disable the L2 cache or replace the processor, motherboard or both, depending on which contains the L2 cache. On some systems the L2 cache is removeable and can be replaced if it can still be purchased.
