I have win98 loaded on my laptop. It is working fine, but whenever I try to shut it down using the Start=>Shutdown , it just hangs in there with the message Windows is shutting down. I have to physically swithc off the power switch, then the next time when I boot it, it goes into scandisk, saying the last windows shutdown was incomplete.

If it's Windows 98 Second Edition, download the Windows 98 SE Shutdown Supplement:

Reduce the startup load in MSCONFIG as much as possible.

Change the sound file in "Windows Start" and "Windows Exit" in SOUNDS in the Control Panel to "None".

If you are running an anti-virus utility such as McAfee, also edit the System Scan proprties page, to disable the 'Floppy Scan' at shutdown feature.

This is usually accessed in the systray by right-clicking on the Vshield icon, select System Scan, and enter the password if one has been assigned. The first tabbed page contains this setting.

In addition to the above suggestions.

Go to Control Panel and Power Management.
Set to Never, Never and Never.

Here is another patch that I understand has helped many even if they do not use the mapped drive.
