You need boot record so you can instal win98.
Follow these steps:
1.get a boot record on a floppy
2.Have win98 disk
3.put floppy in
4.Run win98
5.follow instructions
If you did it right you should be able to go onto your computer!
P.S You could of reinstalled windows on your old drive.
Then delete the virus!

one thing I don't understand: did you buy a new disk. For if so, no such thing would have been seen like windows 98 opening window.
So if you give information, please give the right info, for it must have been a disk that was used, or prepared by someone.

If it indeed is an old drive, then you should enter the bios and do a hard disk detect and then save the new information to the bios.

First of all, what did you set the drive to in your computer. If you set it to master, the computer shouldn't boot anyways, and should give you an error, however, it you set the drive to slave then your old hard-drive will still be used to boot from. If you didnt' touch any of this, then chances are its still trying to boot from your old hard drive, look up your manuals and look for jumper settings in them about master/drive settings. I presume you wish to reinstall windows on your new hard-drive (thats the best choice) so i would just back up all your data possible, and then reformat all your drives, and start from scratch. This is the best way. You should boot from a windows 98 start up disk and then run the program called fdisk.exe and delete your current partition and then make new ones, as per what you want. Then you will need to format your drives, and install windows 98 on the C drive. Also in fdisk make sure you create an active partition on the C drive, which will be the drive you boot from.
And i dunno what these other people are talking about. "looking for boot record from floppy...not found" is totally normal, all systems will do that, and then it comes up "looking for boot recond from HD..found" usually you can't see that because it happens so fast. Anyways, thats all normal, but you have to make sure you have set your new hard drive to be a master, and then your old hard drive as slave, and you should be all set.

Suppose back up is not available and reformatting a drive is not an option. How would one install Win 98SE over the installation, recognize all software and hardware and not hanging on boot up.
