I have a problem with a network of 3 PC's. 2 of them are Win98 SE, the other Win98. One of the Win98 SE PC's is the server, the other 2 are the clients. This is the configuration of the network of a friend of mine who asked me to help him, because it doesn't work anymore while before it worked perfectly. He said he hasn't changed anything.

All 3 PC's have the TCP/IP protocol installed, NetBEUI, are in the same workgroup, have the same subnetmask and a IP adress (x.x.x.1-3). I think the problem is somewhere in the fact that I can ping the own network card on each PC but I cannot reach the other PC's, so PC1 cannot reach PC 2 and 3 and so on.

Now, is there maybe something wrong with the hub (although the lights of it still flicker)? Is there something wrong with the cables? Something wrong with the network card's? Or should i do something in the configuration (add another protocol or something?)

Have you enabled file and print sharing?

If not go to control panel, networking.
somewhere there is a button to click file and print sharing, then another screen will pop up with two check boxes, one for print sharing and the other for file sharing. Check the appropriate box/es

Good luck

You could also try:
start > find > computer and
type in the name of one of the other 2 PCs on your network to see if it can see them this way.

No, those things are already turned on and I cannot find the PC's. For example, I can only see PC1 on PC1, PC2 on PC2 and PC3 on PC3.

Maybe I'm just being stupid now : all 3 PC's have only a IP and subnetmask configured, do I need to configure something more on every NIC (like gateway or something?)

you have to be able to ping first. I would use a crossover cable and hook up just two pc together first and see if you ping from each machine, if it works you may have hub problem.

I would trying to run winipcfg on each machine and instruct to release and renew the addresses. The hub would also be suspect, as stated above. Under TCP/IP properties> obtain automatically. Under bindings> Client for MS networks & File & print sharing for MS networks should both be present and checked. Disable DNS.
