Have you tried to access the share using it's UNC name?
Try typing this at the command prompt:
//servername/sharename (hit enter)
Of course rather than actually typing "servername and "sharename", you would type the actual server name and the actual share name.
See what you get this way and post back.

Hey, I've got your answer. Whatever your logging onto the Win 98 PC with as far as user name and password, you have to set up a user on the Win 2000 Server with the same user name and password. That's it!

You need to be logged in as Administrator or with an Admin level account to change passwords for users.

It's extremely easy tagore, have no fear.
I am running on Win 2000 right now, but I'm sure it's the same as this, or very similar to XP in creating users.
First, like Martin said, log in to Windows XP with the Administrator account, or someone who has Administrator rights.
Then you just go to Control Panel and click on "Users and Passwords". You then just click Add - just follow the easy prompts and fill in the name and password of the new user, and you'll be all set.
Post back, let me know how it goes.

...forgive my mental lapse you ARE running Windows 2000, so it IS going to be just like I described.
