I can't set my AGP video card to be the primary display adapter in Windows 98 multi-monitor mode

I have an Asus P2B motherboard, a Matrox Millenium G200 AGP video card and an PCI S3 Virge DX (Manufacturer Azure).

From what I have read the video card that is installed last becomes the primary display adapter.

I have tried installing the S3 PCI card 1nd and 2st. Every time I have tried the PCI video card becomes the Primary display adapter.

Can an AGP video card be configured to be the primary adapter in multi-monitor mode?

Also, the first video card installed always takes interupt 11, when the PCI card is installed it takes interupt 10 (whether it is installed 1st or 2nd). Is the PCI card taking over as Primary VGA because IRQ 10 has a higher priority than IRQ 11. Can I manually configure the IRQ settings if this is causing the problem?

Have you looked in your BIOS settings to see if you can disable the plug & play to manually change the IRQ settings for the video adapter? On my AMI BIOS, I can tell it use Interrupt A or B. Maybe you could then assign A to the AGP, and B to the PCI card, or vice-versa. Maybe Windows is really looking at the interrupt at the primary, and not the last card installed.

Scott1 is wrong....AGP and PCI are differant Buses, and AGP will *always* be initialized *after* PCI by default, PCI is Bus 0, AGP is Bus 1

On my own motherboard, there is an option in peripheral setup to init AGP display first. If you do not find that in your CMOS settings, you will have to download a BIOS Flash upgrade from the maker of your motherboard and hope that the feature was added.
if you need to buy a new motherboard, try Tyan's boards...they are very fast and stocked with features

windows98 getting started book says:
"The multiple monitor feature supports only PCI graphics adapters at this time."
Just ran into this myself with ATI rage AGP
and All-in-Wonder PCI.

Same problem: using asus p2b motherboard bios setups to specify AGP first/PCI second, the cards won't initialize on bootup. So, I'm stuck using AGP as secondary, PCIs as primary.

Hey anyone know of a cheap multimonitor graphics card? I think the only two that are out cost $500 or so

Okay,
Which is it? Must you use only PCI cards, or, can you use PCI and AGP mixed in a duel monitor situation?

you can have agp and pci, but every time I set the agp card to be primary in bios, windows won't initialise the pci card.
I guess it's to do with the way agp uses memory..? anyway, I've got another problem as well..my all-in-wonder tv tuner won't work when I try dual monitoring..
any tips?
