I have just formatted a hard drive but was unable to get the Serial Key. What I am wondering is can I still get the key if I have a copy of the contents of the original hard drive? Any help would be appreciated, thanks:)

Yes if that contents includes a copy of the registry.

Look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
In the right hand pane you will find it.
