I have 2 machines, 1 win98, 1 winxp. I tried setting up my xbox with the xp machine using the xp network wizard, and chose the gateway option. After doing this, it made the 98 machine's web browsing die.
My system setup is router/hub splits internet connection between the two pc's. I have checked the IP's as it is dhcp, they are setup automatically. The XP machine works fine, however the 98 machine can only ping everywhere including internet addresses and www addresses.
I have tried a number of solutions such as changing IP's, DNS and network cards. I have ran the XP network detection tool under all options and on the 98 machine, to no effect. I have tried reinstalling the TCPIP options on the 98 machine, to no effect. The IE on the 98 machine says dns error, and mozilla says connection refused.
The firewall on the machine is setup fine to allow access. I am stumped as to what the problem is, and how it can be fixed.
My only idea is the setting up of the gateway on the XP machine has messed up a setting somewhere, any ideas?

There are no proxy settings in IE, other than the previous settings before. Only automatically detect settings is ticked

Managed to finally solve the problem, Norton Internet Security was to blame, I disabled, internet worked, enabled it prevented web browsing.
Did a reinstall and everything was fine.
Damn norton
