Win98 install hangs

OS: Windows 98
CPU/Ram: Pentium II
Comment:

I've tried upgrading, I've tried installing from DOS, but every single time I get to loading the plug and play devices, Win98 setup stalls. I've got a Sony VAIO, Pentium II. It had Windows 95 (I have an upgrade disc). I tried upgrading, many error messages and finally, hangs. I've reformatted the hard drive (from DOS) and installing the upgrade as if it were the full version (with some wonderful help from this web site - Thanks!), but each and every attempt has stalled right at plug and play. I've searched through the Microsoft support pages and this forum, but either there's no final answer shown, or the situation isn't exactly the same as mine, or the solution just didn't help. Can anyone help me?

Thanks,
Leann

Boy, oh boy. This is my sister's computer, so I'm not 100% familiar with it. I'm betting it's 16 - how do I tell for sure? and I really am not sure of hard drive size. Hmmm. Lot of help I am.

Hi y'all,

System information should tell you if you have 16, or 32 fat...

Installing the Win98 OEM Version Over Win95
Normally you can't install the OEM Version of Windows98 if you have an existing Win95 on your system.
To get around this problem:
1. Boot the PC with the Windows 95 Emergency Startup Disk to the MS-DOS prompt but make sure your CD
ROM drivers are loaded on the disk and have access to the CD_ROM drive.
2. Run the MS-DOS editor EDIT and create a dummy file NTLDR (no extension) in the root dir C:\
3. In the Windows95 directory (usually C:\WINDOWS), rename the file WIN.COM.
4. Start the Windows 98 Setup with: SETUP.exe /NTLDR
5. You will be prompted for the directory to load Windows98 into, by default if you already have Windows95 loaded and are upgrading, it will have c:\windows.000 make sure you change it to c:\windows or it will load Win98 in another directory.

beansoup (I'd love to hear the explanation for *that* lol): I didn't have an operating system installed the last time. I reformatted the hard drive, copied some files from a floppy, then copied the WIN98 directory over, then ran setup from the DOS prompt. Funny thing happened: when asking for my product key, it wouldn't take the code from the 98upgrade. I had to use my code from Win98 SE and it worked...

I found this on Microsoft's site. HTH.
==============
Go into Safemode on reboot (press F8 key every second until start menu appears and the select safemode option)

Click on start run and then type MSCONFIG and hit enter

Click on System.ini, then [boot]

Now remove tick beside Display.drv=pnp.drv (this device is now disabled)

Click OK and reboot, system will now complete setup, once finished enable Display.drv=pnp.drv and everything should be fine

From your description it doesn't seem like this is the problem, but ... Check in the Bios for an anti-virus option. Make sure it is disabled.

Hi. You have certainly tried lots of things! It may be that your pnp drivers are out of date. Marooma's suggestion, above, to disable them might do the trick. If so, once it's up I would search amd find an update for these drivers on the mobo site. PII is kind of dated, so it's a good bet to check this out. If all else fails, you might just forget the updrade disk and find a full 98SE install disk. Format it clean and start over. HTH I'm kinda curious about Beansoup, too.

Try these setup switches. They bypass the plug-n-play BIOS.

Hi y'all,

" It had Windows 95 (I have an upgrade disc)."

LOL This stuck in my mind, so I was trying to load win98 over 95...Sorry folks...

I can only add, Sometimes plug and play hardware can conflict, mouse drivers will not work correctly, or everything may work fine.
It all depends on what kind of hardware you use and how many pieces of hardware you are using.

beansoup: we've just got the basics: CD drive, modem along with video, sound: no printer, no scanner, etc.

It might be interesting to note that the modem that is in the pc is not the original. I don't know if that would make a difference or not... Windows 98 doesn't know what was there to begin with.

Leann,

I wouldn't think so. If you run setup again from the dos prompt using the switches above I would think the new setup (using the switches) would supersede what was done before without having to re-format.

I think it's loaded! When I retried Marooma's first suggestion (de-selecting Display.drv=pnp.drv in system.ini) and it stalled, I walked away, only to come back much later and see it was going again. I think I got all the way through setup, and it wanted to install a driver for my monitor. I let it install a generic driver. Then I went back in system.ini and reselected Display.drv=pnp.drv. Now it hangs on startup. I went into safe mode and deselected Display.drv=pnp.drv, but that didn't help. Seems like I need a new driver -would you all agree?
