Win98 second edition. Used to shut down fine, lately just hangs - have to reboot. I've been through many threads here about this and tried it all; microsoft windows shut down troubleshooter, disabled and re-enabled the fast shutdown, etc.
I don't have the 'disable fast shutdown' under the Program/Accessories/System Tools/etc. Basically there is no "System Information" selection there which everyone refers to. I found the disable fast shutdown in msconfig/advanced and have been trying it that way. Now, when I have it set, I go to shut down and my system automatically reboots.... I'm at my wits end here.
Anyone want to take a stab at this one?

Have you tried installing the Win 98 shutdown patch ?

Have you tried going to the 'Close Program' windows (ctrl-alt-del) and closing everything, before shutting down?

The shut-down patch does the same thing as disabling fast shut down with MSCONFIG. The patch removes the option from MSCONFIG. Try disabling virus scanning of floppy discs on shut down, disabling all power saving options, install the mapped drive patch, and remove any sounds on shutdown.

I'm having this problem too. I first noticed it after applying the lastest Windows Update. Did you do this also?

Mark, I have absolutely nothing running most of the time but the bare minimum (explorer, systray) so it's not that.
Dave, I turn off my norton (ctrl/alt/del way)but there is one thing I am not sure of; does some part of norton still insist on working even if I shut it down? I have gone in and closed norton from scanning a: drive but it won't come off the scan for the d: drive, which is my zip. Could that be an issue? I have all sounds removed already, disabled all power saving options - by installing the mapped drive patch are you talking about the patch by microsoft listed above? I've installed that to no avail. If that's not what you're talking about, can you give me more info?
Crescent, no haven't done any Win updates in some time (other than the recent patch to try and fix this).
Thanks for all the info here folks.

Norton has an option to disable virus scanning of floppy drive on shut-down. Make sure this option is enabled.
MS issued a few patches for shut-down problems. If you have disabled fast shut-down through MSCONFIG, it won't be necessary to install the patch. However, the mapped drive patch should be installed, even if you have no mapped drives.
Mapped drive shut-down

Have tried all the fixes and none had worked - I read somewhere that there is some kind of issue with win98 and the bios.
So I searched for a bios update for my system. At the http://tw.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Support/BIOS/BIOS_GA-6VA7+.htm web site I found a bios upgrade for my system.
I found one that specifically targets the shutdown issue with win98.
I flashed my bios with the update - formated the hard drive and reinstalled windows it now shutsdown and restarts like it should.
Note only select a bios update specifically for your system or you can have big problems.
