Hi,

I'm trying to format my Win98 hard drive but it's giving me a "FORMAT NOT SUPPORTED ON DRIVE C:" message.

I 'm using a good bootable disk and I have tried "FORMAT C:" and "FORMAT C:/S"

Would Fdisk work? If so, how do I enter that command? Do is need Win98 CD support to be format C:?

Bottomline.....HELP! Please!!

Doesn't sound like you know what you're doing. Do you know the make/model of your hard drive? If so, go to the manufacturer's website & download their diagnostic software. Once you've downloaded it to your hard drive, double click on it & it will prompt you to insert a floppy disk...the software will then be installed on the disk & the disk will be made bootable. Then just reboot off the floppy & follow the instructions...you'll be able to partition, format, diagnose & repair, write zeros to the drive, etc. Once you've done that, boot off the Win98 boot floppy & you should be able to install Win98. And YES! when installing 98, you HAVE to choose CD support, how else is it gonna read off the CD? Watch the screen for the letter assigned to the CD drive...let's say it's assigned the letter "E". Pop in the win98 CD & when you're at the A prompt, just do the following:

A:\
A:\E:\ [hit enter key]
E:\setup [hit enter key]

Windows installation should begin

I don't think you have a valid dos partition. The RAMdrive created by your bootdisk is choosing the next available drive letter. If you don't have a valid dos partition the RAMdrive sets up at c:. If you try to format a RAMdrive you get the 'format not supported. . . ' error.

To check, boot with the bootdisk. At the a:\> prompt:

fdisk

and enter. Y to large disk support, then option 4. Exactly what does it say?
