Win98 error message

I have recently done a clean install on my Sony Vaio PCG-F520 laptop, everything appeared fine except for when I tried to run some .exe files I downloaded from the Sony support website to re-install drivers for my modem, I get the message "OpenFile 1 failed" in a severe message box, this also happened when I tried to do the same for the display drivers...any ideas????
