Hi all. I recently got a Windows 98 pc so I could play some of my older favorite games that don't work on XP. I use a KVM switch to change from my XP pc and W98 pc, and it works fine.
I installed a game called "British Open Championship Golf", and remembered there was a patch for it. Found the patch, d/l and unzipped it then copied the five files to a blank cd. Then I put the cd in the W98 pc, tried to copy the files to the hdd, but it only copied 4 of them. The one it didn't copy was a file called "PATCHW32.DLL". So I copied just that file onto a cd using my XP machine, but when I loaded it on the W98 pc explorer found nothing on the disc, but I know the file is there! I checked properties of it on XP, but it just says "unknown application file", and both read only and hide are both unchecked.
I'm really baffled. This patch came out in 1996 I believe, so it's not like it's a file W98 wouldn't recognize. I tried running the .bat file anyway with only the 4 files, but of course an error msg comes up saying I'm missing the PATCHW32.DLL file, but I can't get the darn thing onto the pc!
Any ideas what the problem may be? Thanks in advance.
You could also type winfile in the W98 Run box and see if it shows up there. It's the old Win31 File Manager so it will all be 8 character format with truncations. FM will need to be setup from its toolbar to show everything.
Thanks for trying to help. This is really funky. I tried the dos window solution, but no luck. If I unzip the the zip file on XP, I get 5 files including the .dll file. (And that is the only .dll file of the 5 btw). But I tried copying the zip file onto a cd with XP, then copied that zip file to the W98 pc, and it worked. So I thought "Well, I have the original zip file containing that .dll file on the 98 pc, so now it's GOT to be there" So I unzip it right on that pc and...only 4 files and no .dll file! How is this possible?
Another option, after the fact of course, would have been to unzip the files, individually zip them, then upload to a filesharing site or your homepage directory. The rezipping may be unnecessary depending on who your webspace provider is.
