OS: win98 not SE
CPU/Ram: 2M
Product: Compaq Presario 5170
Comment:

When starting Compaq Presario 5170 running Win98 does not boot just displays 'OVERRIDE' when attempting to start. Boot process stops. Tried F10 to get into BIOS but response is the same. Any ideas?

Seems F1 is to enter your bios. F10 seems to be for hard drive detect.

Standard steps to resolve most startup problems
First, use the following steps to determine if the hard drive is being detected in the BIOS:

1.
Before you begin, remove everything (like USB drives, floppy disks, CD and DVD discs) from the PC and connect only the original mouse, monitor and keyboard.
Turn on the PC, press the F1 key repeatedly at the first screen to enter the BIOS Setup Utility.
2.
Use the Arrow and Enter keys to scroll down the first screen (usually Main) and select Primary Master or First Channel Device 0 or similar.
3.
Verify the hard drive is listed next to Primary Master or First Channel Device 0.
*
If a reference to the hard drive is listed, refer to the steps in the section Hard drive detected .
*
If the text Auto or None is listed next to Primary Master or First Channel Device 0, refer to the steps in the section Hard Drive is not detected .

Hard drive detected
The master boot record is a small protected space on the hard drive that holds important information about the data on the hard drive. Use the following procedure to repair the master boot record:
NOTE: These steps are for Windows XP. If your PC has Windows 95, 98, or ME, perform a system recovery using recovery discs.

1.
Restart the PC with a Windows XP CD, Recovery Console CD, or Recovery Tools CD in the top CD or DVD drive and open Microsoft Recovery Console.
NOTE: If you do not have a CD with recovery console, try the following:
1.
Turn on the PC, press the F10 key repeatedly at the first screen.
2.
At the Recovery screen, click Advanced Options.
3.
Press the Alt + D keys at the same time to open a command prompt window.
4.
2.
When the Windows XP Setup screen appears, press the R key to open the Recovery Console.
3.
When the login prompt appears, press the number next to the windows version MiniNT (or Windows) and type the logon password. Try pressing Enter if you do not know the password.
4.
At the command prompt, type the following:
fixmbr /device/harddisk0
fixmbr /device/harddisk1
5.
Restart the PC. If the error persists, continue to the next step.
6.
Perform a full system recovery using recovery discs if possible.
If the error still appears after following these steps, try a system recovery. For more information refer to the document below that applies to your PC:
HP and Compaq PCs - Performing a System Recovery in Microsoft Windows XP
HP Pavilion Desktop PCs - Performing a System Recovery in Microsoft Windows 98 and Me
Compaq Presario Desktop PCs - How to Perform a System Recovery
7.
If the recovery cannot be completed from recovery discs, replace the hard drive.

Alot of irrelevant information. Question was posted in Win98 forum, machine specs clearly state Win98. Machine was manufactured long before WinXP was released.

But nothing there points to what OVERRIDE means. I don't think I've ever heard of that one.

Are you using on-board video or have you added a video card?

Are you positive 98 never starts loading?

Agreed never heard of that myself either. So at least we worked out its F1 to enter the Bios not F10.

I am sorry I did use F1 and not F10 initially as show on the HP/Compaq web site. The 'OVERRIDE' shows on the display before the BIOS screen shows. Because of that I was seeking other ideas before disconnecting the various devices. I tried booting from a floppy but that did not start it either. Based on this I doubt it will try to boot from the recover disk.

I have the original video card.

I want to thank all who responded. The question about the video card from DAVEINCAPS prompted me to look for documentation on the COMP USA monitor and sure enough it states that the monitor will display 'OVERRIDE' if the monitor is turned on before the PC is turned on. What this means is the the PC is not starting up even though the power supply starts. It means I can now do conventional troubleshoooting. Thanks again for your input.

So it's a monitor message and not from the bios or video card. Keep us posted on your troubleshooting results.

Finally got a chance to work on this again.
You are correct the 'OVERRIDE' message was generated by the monitor.
My machine is back up again. I removed the battery and unplugged the computer. Tested the battery to ensure it was good (3V). Waited an hour (just for good measure), reinstalled battery and started it up. Verified the CMOS settings (F10) and then it auto-detected the hardware and came up fine. Once again thanks for your help and hopefully I can return the favor.
