Win98 can't read FAT32 from Win2000

I have a hard drive from a Windows 2000 Server with one partition formatted as FAT32. I transferred the drive to a Windows 98 SE machine and the OS was able to see the FAT32 partition. The first level of folder names in the drive look OK, but when I drill down into the folders, the filenames have funny characters and I can't open any of the files.

Sounds like the files are NTFS. You can convert your entire system by going to start/run/command, then typing in convert(hard drive letter):/fs:/ntfs. You will not lose any info on your system. However you can not convert back.

Stranger still, out of the twenty folders I have in the FAT32 partition, there is actually one folder where the contents are OK.
I plan to install Windows 2000 on this machine and use the FAT32 partition to share files between the two boots. Is this at all possible?
