this morning i met my old friend and ask my help regarding his computer

the problem:
1-
first i installed a ccleaner and its working

he told me that few days past he cannot connect to internet because of problem in network (TCP/IP) and im not so familiar in this thing.
so we tried to fix by, Control Panel ---Network and reinstalling TCP/IP but the problem is he dont have the CD Win98 sE (because its a old pc and its only a gift, second hand)

2-so we try system restore by restarting in MS-DOs (scanreg /restore)
and then we choose the date, so then it reboot itself and its freezzzeee.
(written in the windows like this)

C:\>set classpath..................
C:\>keyb gr, , C:\windows\ command..........
C:>c:c\windows\odilhlp.exe

and then nothing more, it really freezed there
but it can reboot in safemode (only safemode we can use, nothing more)

Can somebody assist us?

You need a W98SE CD to undertake a repair install IMHO.........

Just to be exact, there is no "system" restore in W98 (what you did was a "registry" restore).

Similarly there is no repair install, the nearest thing being Windows re-install (overlay without formatting) but as stated you need the CD for that.

It's a very long shot but you could try IE Repair. Copy/Paste this into the Run box then ensure you are off line before you hit Return key to initiate the command:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Note that if you are using IE5 then substitute 5 for 6 in the above command.

I would lay off registry cleaners if you have no CD. If they make a mistake (and they sometimes do) you will not have a lifeline.

You might be able to get a W98 CD on eBay.

thanks for all your help
First- the old pc can only boot in safemode
2nd- IE is okey i think and so far i remember the problem is the TCPIP (thanks trek1701A for the link)

and i think the main problem here is cant boot in normal because of this:

i remember that when i tried to repair the TCPIP, i got to copy&paste this odilhp.bat in c:\windows
can i delete it in safemode safely? ican only take a look back to the (old) pc by next week

need your kind assistance

Better make sure I'm understanding you right. When you were repairing TCP/IP part of this process was copy/pasting that bat file into Windows.

In which case yes, you should be able to delete it in Safe Mode. In all probability though it will have already done whatever it was inteded to do, so deleting it won't have any effect.

If you are trying to undo whatever the bat file did then you could bring it up in NotePad and post its contents as a text file on here. I suppose it's just possible we might be able to fathom out how to undo whatever it did.

(below there is scanning but it freez only in 4%)

It's hard to be quite certain but this looks very much like a RAM fault. Error messages concerning the registry are a common symptom.

First clean the edge connectors of all RAM sticks with a pencil eraser and reseat them (sometimes it is just an oxide problem).

Then try each RAM stick in first position on it's own. That way the faulty ones and good ones will be evident.

There is also a RAM tester available from www.docmemory.com (you create a floppy from the download - don't just put the download onto the floppy). You then boot with the floppy in the drive and run the test. No errors are acceptable.
