win98 boot disk / cd rom support

I have a 486DX2/66 - 24Mb RAM - 420Mb HD with the HD formatted because of a recent crash. I can't reinstall anything because a win95 boot disk (even with cd-rom support) won't recognize the Mitsumi 4 speed CRMC-FX400D cd-rom drive. Does anybody have a win98 boot disk for me? I have heard these give the best chance for recognising cd-rom's. I already have the win98 cd-rom.

If you don't have MSCDEX.exe in your C: you can't install your CD-Rom drivers, everyone should have this file so if you know someone to copy it from - get it and copy it to your C: then install the CD-Rom and you can install Windows. Of course if you have MSCDEX.exe installed then try your other option.

Mscdex should be on the boot disk if it has cd rom suport. Try this, use the Boot disk and hit f8 when starting win95 flashes on the screen. Choose step by step confermation. watch the messages as each driver loads. When it loads cdide.sys it should say that the controller was detected. Then another .sys driver is loaded for the cd rom and see if it is detected. If no messages try a /v switch or similar (use the /? switch for help)

You can type in your search engine ; 98boot.exe and this should lead you to the site to download it, I forgot where I got it from. It is not a boot disk but you can make one from it with all the files you need for Cd-Rom support.
