Subject: Win95(Jp) to Win98SE(Eng)
OS: Win95(Japanese)
CPU/Ram: 80MB
Model/Manufacturer: NEC PC-9821 V12
Comment:
Can someone out there help me with upgrading a Japanese NEC PC-9821 V12 running Win95(Jp)to Win98SE(Eng), please? I have a bootable Win98SE(Eng)CD & bootdisk that works fine with my English PC, but my Japanese one freezes with a blank screen when I tried booting from both my Win98 boot CD & bootdisk. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Just to ask is the BIOS in Japanese? I've always wondered if they were. Does the system boot fine without your bootdisk and cd rom?

Please check the specs for your laptop. Certain Japanese computers (laptops especially) have BIOS's designed to display double byte text (In order to display Japanese text natively). You will not be able to install an English version of Windows.

Above system is a desktop, and runs fine on Win95(Jp). I can't seem to get into CMOS setup via "F2" key...there's no "Del" key on this Jp/Eng Keyboard, but the only "POST" test displayed is the memory test which is in English. When I tried running setup from Win98SE (eng CD) an error message says something like "Can't continue due to character set mismatch". Hope the info helps. Thanks guys!!

If it's like the NEC 9801 it won't run English DOS/windows because the memory map is different.
