On 3/31/03 began to get a Error Box stating that SYSTEM file MMTASK.exe was possibly corrupted and should be reinstalled. This occured at start-up.
Initially, afraid to delete since I had no immediate way to reload system. So... I renamed the file, took the system down, brought it back up, and the system message?? was gone.
Furtermmore, the system continues to run with no problems. This suggests a virus that generated the bogus system message.
Suggest that anyone getting this same or similar message involving MMTASK.exe rename the file and observe the results.
Incidentally, my antivirus software, not Norton, didn't catch it if it is truly a virus.

Go to the URL below and read up on this virus and the other files involved.

It might be a good idea for everyone reading this to do a find for mmtask.exe on their system. You might find a mmtask.tsk (which is OK) but not a mmtask.exe. It's the Trojan.

Run a virus check from 1 of these .

It is not uncommon for viruses/trojans to take a file name that is legitimate and normal to Windows in terms of it's "name" but with a different extension (often .exe).
In this case it looks like .exe for .tsk but it can be.exe for any old thing, like .dll
