hhheeellllpppp,

I've been fighting a pc for a while and I'm loosing ...

System - PII 266 95Meg ram - running Win 95B

Symtoms:
when starting windows the system slows down and is very jerky. You can hear the HD spinning in intermittant jerks ... The mouse sputters and cuts in and out as you move it across the screen. The keyboard is slow to respond and sometimes doesn't at all, and the sound gets stuck. You can boot the system and sometimes it will do this and other times it will boot fine. If it boots up with a problem - you can let it sit for 10 minutes or so and it will start working again like normal.

The first thing I did was to disable Find Fast (as I've seen FF do this to systems). Then I unistalled the soundcard and reinstalled it. Next I did the latest Virus scan.

When you boot in safemode it works fine. When you boot in safemode with network support it works fine. When you boot and go thru a step by step confirmation you can disable the registry and it still has the errors - Disable the config.sys and you still get erros.

Disable the loading of windows drivers and it works fine.

Device Manager shows no conflicts in either safe mode or regular mode.

Bootlog.txt shows the following failures:
loadfailed = ndis2sup.vxd
loadfailed - vshare
Dynamic Load Failed nuwave.drv (file not found)
Dynamic Load Failed C:\windows\system\mrci.vxd (file not found)
DEVICEINITFAILED = VSUMTABD
INITCOMPLETEFAILED = SDVXD

there are no errors after the kernal is initialized and all the windows drivers are loaded. In looking on MS Support, they say that these are not much to worry about and shouldn't affect the system

Nothing has changed on this PC - it had some registry errors and GPFs a few months ago - but has been ok up to about 2 weeks ago when this strange thing started happening. The only difference is - I received a new server and this pc connects to it. Nothing was changed there, other than the remapping of 2 drives.

Does anyone have any insite to this problem. Its got me stumped.

HELP!!!

Thanks,

Have you tried wiping the hard drive clean and reinstalling Win95 again? If not you might want to do that, it sounds like that will be the only solution to your problem.

whoever suggest reinstalling the OS is an ass and knows nothing. the delay, if it is excessive, is probably the ensoniq driver looking for the non existant nuwave.drv file. i hex edited the vxd (eapci.vxd) and removed that string, ill see what happens now. 'DMA' is microshafts reference to bus mastering, and the OEM DMA stuff in win95 osr2.x and win98 are fairly black and white. what is this, a ziff wannabe area? to those who suggest useless things, try using linux for a while and learning how to solve problems without reinstalling crap.

well. if there is an ensoniq audio PCI / creative labs PCI 64/128 (ESS 1370/1371) audio chipsets in the system then hex editing the nuwave.drv string in the eapci.vxd file into OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO rather than the original hex seems to deter this excessive boot delay. of course the linux implementation of the driver is not problematic like this one. creative labs, please learn to support your products.

You might want to download a trial version of RegRepair 2000 from www.easydesksoftware.com. Run it a few times and it will help eliminate most of the errors. Only one I can't get it to fix is the nuwave.drv fail to load. They state it is a problem that program won't fix. And I don't have a eapci.vxd file that Brenden mentioned. Will check some other sound files - I have an Ensoniq board.

The main culprit is that Windows does not realize you don't have a Network connection, or you used to have one. And Windows is trying to seek and install ndis2sub.vxd. To eliminate this, use CONTROL PANEL/ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS/WINDOWS-SETUP to remove Dial-up Networking support. Then reboot, ReEnable Dial-up Networking Support. It will install files from your Windows CD. Now recreate your Dial-up connection. This should eliminate some of the problems, if not all.

don't elemienate DUN. Check your "Network" settings in controle panel by clicking on the Icon of the same name. You should, if you do not have a network card, have listed only 3 items "dial up adapter" "TCP/IP" and "Microsoft Family Logon". If you are trying to load other things it will cause many problems. I know cause I had the same problem with this file ndis2sub.vxd. It seems that some times "windows" can not figure out that you do not have a network card especilley after you reinstall it.

Using an Hex editor (like Hackman), search for the ASCII string "nuwave.drv" in the "eapci.vxd" file. Replace it with "dsound.vxd". Now the Directsound initializes twice, and the boot delay is gone! The "bootlog.txt" file shows no errors.
I've found this problem in other Creative sound board drivers, too, but I don't know if this "fix" works for other drivers...
Sorry for my english...

Für User mit Probleme mit SBPCI16, SBPCI64, SBPCI128 ...
--------------------------------------------------------
Dein Computer bricht das Booten ab, im Bootlog.txt erscheint nuwave.drv not found?

5. Kontolliere nach dem Booten den Bootlog.txt.
Die Fehlermeldung ist verschwunden.

Mit den besten Grüssen
Timo
