I'm having problems installing Win 95SE on
a brand new 3mb drive for an IBM Thinkpad 760EL. This drive works fine: it was easily
FDISK'ed and formatted. The BIOS reads the 3mb fine. I installed DOS 6.0 & Win 3.11 without a hitch. However, for Win 95I get just barely passed the point when it accepts the registration #'s and then the screen goes wild and locks up. I'm going to try adding some of the VGA drivers (under DOS/ Win 3.11) to see if that's the problem.
What other Thinkpad drivers are essential to properly install Win 95?
Thanks

A Win 95 boot disk with CD-ROM support and the Windows 95 CD is all you need to install this operating system.

Drivers are installed after setup is completed if they are not already taken care of by the Windows installation.Good luck.

I started out with W95 full installation CD. Got just passed the registration point and then the screen went haywire. I then installed Win 3.11, which went fine, and tried W95 upgrade by diskette. Again, the screen went haywire at the same point.
I chose the full installation both times. Would chosing the laptop or custom installation change things? I also checked on the IBM Thinkpad website and they recommend installing the various drivers after Win 95.
Any thoughts would be welcomed.

Would try the W95 CD laptop installtion (not the upgrade W95 CD) on a clean formated and partitioned hard drive with no other OS on it.
If the same problem continues, then there is something else to check into. Presume the new hard drive is a 3GB vs a 3MB!!! Is the new hard drive IBM ThinkPad compatible?

Thanks for the good advise. It's a brand new
NOS 3GB thinkpad hard drive (sorry about the
3MB). The computer is fine, as another 810mb hard drive works perfectly.I'll reformat the hard drive & try the 'laptop configuration' and see what happens over the weekend.Anthony

Have a TP760EL that I've used for years. Still have its User's Guide, Manual, etc. The User's Guide lists error messages and error codes.
Are you getting any error messages or error codes while all of this is going on?

I have fairly good news to share. I reformatted and tried all over again. This time using the custom installation it showed that there was no laptop monitor installed. So, I picked one and everything went relatively well. I was later able to upgrade to Win 98SE and installed MS office.
The only problem is that the screen is about 2/3 of total usable space. I loaded the TP 760EL display adapter and that didn't change things. Somehow, there is an IRQ11 conflict between the Trident driver and some other device.
Otherwise the laptop runs just fine.
Anthony

Hey, that is one big hurdle you managed!!
What is indicating that there is an IRQ conflict?
A thought...Right click the Desktop. Are there any settings for resolution that may allow you to stretch the display out to the full screen?
An LCD panel with 1024 x 768 resolution displaying a resolution of 640 x 480 uses abot 66% of the screen.

Have you been to the ibm support site? Look especially for the "driver matrix" page.
http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=TPAD-MATRIX
and it looks like the 760EL page is
http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=DSHY-3SBNHE
Also look for articles on their site explaining various how to's and issues for your machine.

Yup. That was it. I had the wrong LCD resolution size and it now had the full screen with a little bit of trial and error.
With the new hard drive, the laptop runs great, except when it's plugged in AC for a while, then it powers down and shuts off. I had to let it sit for a while and then it ran fine. I think the battery which is trying to hold a charge, but doesn't may be the culprit. If I take the non-functioning battery out of the laptop, will I be able to run just of the AC?
Anthony

I don't know about your model, but I've had several different thinkpads, and all would run on a PROPER AC supply. If you are NOT using the proper adaptor, it could give you shutdown problems.

"If I take the non-functioning battery out of the laptop, will I be able to run just off the AC?"
Yep.
Try doing so and see how it goes.
As posted above, do you have the right AC adapter? Would think so...particularly if you have used the TP for a while, and it is only just now that the problem comes up.
Go to Control Panel and check the Power Options. Might be something in there set to power down the TP.
