I'n not sure if this shouldn't be in the hardware section, but since I'm trying to install Win 95 please bear with me...
We have several identical early Pentium PCs on which we run Win 95. One of them stopped working (wouldn't boot) and I have been playing around with it for the whole day - swapped just about everything - hard drive, processor, memory, cache...
It boots to Dos ok now - but when I try to install Win95 either off cab files on the hard drive (or from CD) it stops very early on, just after the point where it says "copying setup files to your hard drive", a few seconds after scandisk quits.
A second peculiarity is that when I swapped the hard drive for one with Windows 95 already installed, it booted but stopped loading at the splash screen.
Andy ideas anyone? I'm stumped!
Thanks

a harddrive with win95 already installed wo'nt boot since it was loaded on another motherboard.
when you tried to load 95 from cd-rom, you don't say if you formatted the harddrive first.
you might try loading windows into a diff directory. when install asks what directory to install to , type
c:\windows.000
you posted the os as win95A. that os was never on cd-rom. its on 27 floppies, and if someone made a cd-rom of win95A, the copy may not have gone well.

Make sure any virus protection in cmos is turned off when you do the installation.
My first thought would be a problem with the cdrom or RAM, but you say you swapped the RAM out. Second to that would be the HD. It'd be a good idea to run fdisk and remove and recreate the HD partition. Then format of course. Then try the installation.
95a came out on both floppies and cdrom but as uppercrust says, the cd may be bad--scratched or whatever.
If the PCs are identical you shouldn't have a problem when you swapped the drives, just make sure it's identified properly in cmos.
