Hi, ive got Windows 98 & tried to install an old game which decided to overwrite my c drive & crash the pc! Now when i turn on my pc it says :
" vmm32.vxd file is required to run windows.
If this file is not in your PATH you may need to reinstall windows"
Is there any way of restoring windows or getting this file onto my computer?

(please help i think i'm a walking computer destroyer/virus :(

Hit F8 on boot up and choose command prompt. at the prompt type. scanreg/restore then hit enter. Choose a date before you installed the game and follow the prompts. Hope it helps.

There is a program if you can find it called second chance. Works like ME and XP restore but is for 98 and 95. Bit late now I know but good for the future.

No, none of that will help. You cannot restore that file from the CD.

The vmm32.vxd is missing error is a tough one to fix.

There's a manual repair here - but it's generally easier to perform an 'over the top' installation of Windows to restore this rather unique file.

Should have added - start in DOS and check if the file is there:

dir c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd

Just install windows over windows should do the trick and save all your data.

Dont fdisk or format.

Hi laalaa - that particular problem does pop up from time to time. There seem to be a lot of nonsense fixes for it - bad info spreads just as quickly as good on the 'net.

Best thing would be to reinstall Windows in its current directory - this should prevent data loss.

Post back & let us now how you make out.

Hi y'all,

You can restore your system VMM32 folder, if trouble arises with your .VXD files...But, the folder on the win98 CD, is just a shell, therefore of no use in restoring the VMM32 folder..Each computer has it's own unique VMM32 folder..When you experince problems with these VXD files, there is no way out, except re-install windows...After installing windows, insert a blank floppy. Copy your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32 folder, to the floppy, for backup...Insert another blank floppy..Copy the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD file, to the floppy, for backup. If you lose the files again you can restore the folder and files, without re-installing windows...

Happy with the fact that the "file" vmm32.vxd on the Windows CD is just a shell and should never be restored from there.

Sorry, quite confused about your mention of vmm32 "folder". As I understand it you don't restore "folders" from Windows CD anyway, only "files". Have I missed something?

Derek,Hi,

Yes I was referring to copying the VMM32 folder, and the Vmm32.vxd file to floppies, after the re-installation of windows...For backup..The files in the VMM32 folder, are, what I think, should be copied to floppy, for backup..Precautionary measure:-)

Ah yes, I see the point of copying the folder and it's files to floppy.

It was this bit that threw me:
"the folder on the win98 CD, is just a shell". My Win98 CD has no such folder on it. Has yours?

Hi y'all,
I get my folders and files mixed up sometimes:-) I was concerned about the files in the VMM32 folder..There are no folders on the win98 CD..In copying the folder, and the file, to floppies, you would have to do that, after installation of windows, from your H/D..(for a backup)

I'm not so darned perfect either LOL.

It's just that I thought I was about on top of that vmm32.vxd stuff and for a minute I thought I missed out on something.

Thanks for clearing it up. Good idea about backing up "all" the vxd's in vmm32 folder - better to be safe than sorry.

Hi y'all,

derek,
I know you are up on that vmm32 stuff:-) We've been all over it, on other threads..I wish people would backup those files.(VMM32.VXD) and the (VMM32 folder) on floppies.. It would save a lot of time, re-installing windows...
Hope laalaa5433, got the PC going..The link jboy suggested is a good try,(lot of work:-)I agree with jboy that re-installing is a better way to go...(faster)
