win explorer illegal operation

hi, when i boot up my win 98 SE machine win explorer gets an illegal operation on boot up so i cant access anything. its a page fault in the registry or something. i have tried safe mode but the same happens. is there a way around this or will i have to format? i dont want to loose all my files though. thanks Rick

You don't have to format, but you most likely will have to reinstall windows.

I got the same problem now thanks to cwshredder deleting over half of my registry including all windows keys. talk about taking a steamroller to kill a fly . . . . boooooooooo!
