Win 98SE updates?

OS: Win 98SE
CPU/Ram: 256
Product: Gateway Select 750
Comment:

Shortly after Microsoft ended support for OS's before XP, I stumbled on a website that promised to continue providing updates for Win 98 and maybe Win 95.

Does anyone remember what it is?

I have to reinstall 98SE. I have the February 2004 MS CD with updates until then but would like to obtain later ones.

I'll appreciate any suggestions or other avenues for exploration. Thanks.

Microsoft is the entity that creates the updates and they are no longer doing that. For the time being all updates that were created are still available at the MS update site. I believe they extend past your 2004 date.
Look at the links below:

Thanks.

Microsoft, of course, stopped supporting OS's prior to XP and 2000 last June. There were no Win98 updates at the MS links you provided, I don't think (I checked them).

But, as of September or October, someone up there in cyberspace had best intentions of keeping update packages available at their independent non-MS site. And it seemed that they were even thinking about trying to port later XP updates to 98.

I knew I should've bookmarked the site when I stumbled upon it. It's impossible to find using search engines (try typing "98 OR 98SE update" into Google, for starters!).

There ARE updates at those sites. If you go to the regular update site it will scan your system and show you what critical updates are available and not currently installed on your computer. Below is the link to that site.

As far as I know you can still get W98SE Updates from the normal Windows Update website. I've just been there and it is still displaying the only one I didn't want to unstall.

These are of-course only up to 13 June 2006 which was the date of their last one (despite their claims of support until mid July). With a little skill you can also get the file downloads. Going to "read more", corporate updates, or just Googling for the Q number is one way forward.

What, I believe you are referring to is Windows UNOFFICIAL Updates V2.1a which is here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progScreen...

You have to bear a few points in mind though. Despite the initial enthusiasm of the author these updates have not changed since Nov 5th 2005. Also be aware that you have no control on what is put in and it includes a number of "tweaks". Whether these are good/bad reliable/unreliable is a matter of conjecture.

FWIW I've settled for the last MS official Update and am hoping that as far as security is concerned many of the nasties might not actually work on W98SE because they are certain to have been written for XP.

Aha, that link was just the screenshots. Interesting maybe but this is the one I intended:

I totally agree with derek. Those links I provided in the first response have some downloadable updates. They aren't in an easy format though. You need to look a bit. The last link is the official update site and WILL update to the final critical updates that were put out by MS. To expect someone other than MS to write patches for Win98 is not really being realistic.

The point here is that armed with the MS Update CD you can still get the rest of the updates up to June 2006. With a bit of effort you can still download them as files too (although it was easier some years ago).

Even ignoring the merit/demerit of someone else's idea of updates, these unofficial ones will only take you up to Nov 2005 anyway. MS therefore seems to be a better deal.

Does that corporate users site have all of the 98 updates, even the more recent ones? I just glanced quickly and thought that the list looked a little short, or maybe I was used to the windows 95 one lol.

Use the regular update site then look at what updates were applied. take that list and search for those updates on the I.T. site for future use.

Yep, and when you've downloaded them all and installed them you can go back and double check that MS no longer thinks you need them (kinda makes you feel better LOL).

If you want downloads on file that have already been automatically installed then type qfecheck in the Run box and that will list all of those installed for "Windows". Control Panel/Add-Remove also lists some.

Qfecheck will not show IE updates but finding the last cumulative update (916281 for IE6) is all you need. The last cumulative update for Outlook Express 6 was 837009.

The full IE6 SP1 can be obtained here (large file) but will probably require the updates given above:
