I've just upgraded a lot of the components in my machine, including my hard drive. Got it back from the shop and now have to reinstall windows xp. I have the version that requires an older version of windows to upgrade to xp, so tried to install win 98se.
I couldn't find the boot floppy for it, but downloaded it from the net. I followed all of the instructions on this site:
http://www.d-a-l.com/reinstall-win98.php
which are sort of repeated elsewhere. Everything works fine until I get up to running setup off the CD. I get the message:
"This program cannot be run in DOS mode."
Any ideas on how I can get past this problem?

You do not need to install W98SE at all, during the install of XP it will request proof of previous version.......

.......and at that point you simply jam/stick/plug/insert your '98 cd in there in place of the X tra P utrid Cd, and away you go.

"Windows 98 Starts Here" is not the Win98 OS CD, it is a demo program. Nor will this CD qualify for old OS to upgrade.
Best
