i want to setup my computer to boot 98se and run win3.1x, i have applied the dos 7.10 win3.x fix files and i am ready to install win 3.10 the only problem is that for some reason win98se won't restart in ms-dos mode altho it does boot to dos whenever i start my computer or restart is there any way to fix this and will it effect win 3.10. also will win 3.10 work if i install it on my fat32 hardrive with 98se.

Wow, you made a confusing post! You say win98se won't restart in ms-dos and then you say it does boot to dos at start OR restart!
Do have WfW3.11 and Win98se here however they are on different partitions. In the old days it was possible to upgrade Win3.x to Win9x and dual boot however that was limited to FAT16 partitions.
Now with your upgraded Win3.x to FAT32 (3XStart?) it should be possible to do what you want yet i don't think there is any "automatic" method to put them both on a single FAT32 partition.
Most avoid that headache and put Win3.x on it's own partition.
Best

You don't require a separate partition, you can just choose a different folder, such as c:\win (or whatever)
You WILL be required to start in DOS in order to run Win31 though - if you want to have the Windows Startup menu available to facilitate this, use msconfig 'advanced' and select that option
The 3xstart patch is actually to fix "DOS7.1" - not Win31
Computers in the future may have only 1,000 vacuum tubes and perhaps only weigh 1 1/2 tons.

thanks for the fast reply's, i got it setup and working. the win98se problem was when i click start shutdown where it has four choices standby, restart, shutdown,or restart in ms-dos mode if i select restart in ms-dos mode 98se will exit windows and display a black screen and freeze up.also i have my computer configured to boot directly to dos insted of win98 by way of the msdos.sys file. thanx for the help sorry i didn't give enough info about my problem last time.

The flashing cursor when exiting to dos and the PC then locking up is often due to video drivers. Apparently they sometimes don't shutdown properly.
Another thing to check, just to see if it works, is to do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and shut down everything except explorer. Then try exiting to dos.
A third thing, delete the EXIT TO DOS.PIF file in the windows folder and then exit to dos. The file should be recreated when you exit. If that file had been altered, the new one may work right.

thanks for the help. well i tried the 2nd and third thing's with no luck. it must be my video driver. i have an number nine image 128 card. i'll go check with microsoft to see if anyone else had problem's with it.

no more help needed.
1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
2. In the Named box, type *.pif, and then press ENTER.
3. Right-click the Exit to DOS.pif file, and then click Properties.
4. Click the Program tab, and then click the Advanced tab.
5. Click to select the Specify a new MS-DOS configuration check box, and then click OK.

Here's some number 9 drivers from micron ftp site. You might want to see if any of those is an upgrade.

I'm glad the new .pif file worked. I thought just deleting the old one would work but I guess it recreated it the same way.
