To be on the safe side, I'd install the fewest # of components that you can get by with (maybe specify a laptop installation). Don't put a lot of wallpaper, themes, etc. on your desktop because they're resource hogs. Also, keep your startup items to a bare minimum. Put the shortcuts on the Quick Launch toolbar instead. That way you can load what you need when you need it and it won't bog your system down.

Even in my pent 200mmx I have w98 installed and i have all sorts of programs and wallpaper and no boggin down at all
Just remember to clear your cache regulary, A good program for this is called "System Security Suite" and you can find it @ www.moochers.com

Installing a lot of programs doesn't hurt (if you have the disk space), as long as they aren't running. They take up a miniscule amount of memory in the Registry, but that's about all.
