Hello everyone! I'am having a problem with this machine. When it turns on it only gets to the "Windows 98 Microsoft" logo. It is being doing this for several weeks, sometimes it boots normally.
I have already done the following:
1) Disabled programs at start up (Leaving only the basics).
2) Checked CPU/System temperature...everything is OK.
3) Removed expansion cards one by one.
4) Checked voltage...all reading are Ok.
5) Ran scandisk in Windows and DOS. Scandisk always finds problem with files and fixed them. Scandisk does not find bad cluster/sectors on hard drive.
6) Ran Fujitsu's hard drive diagnostics...nothing wrong found! (of course the hard drive brand name is Fujitsu).

Can anybody give some advice to solve this problem? Thanks in advance to all of you.

Robert

I forgot to mention: This machine has no viruses. Spyware has been removed, but still it does not boot everytime it is turned on.

That doesn't sound good and makes me wonder if you have a memory problem.

Doc memory tester

Try re-seating the memory a couple of times. Also all connectors. If scandisk always finds errors, that could be an indication of a memory or HD problem. You could run a memory test from a floppy. I'm curious, how did you check temps on this machine?

I have already used a diferent chip of RAM that I know is good....but still the problem persists. But anyways I'll check RAM with Doc Memory Tester tonight.

I checked temperature using system monitor in BIOS.

Thanks again for your great answers!

Have you tried booting, pressing f8 at startup and choose the loading step by step option...that one might let you know what program, driver or function is holding things up

"scandisk always finds errors" could possible be a bad IDE cable, but agree most likely hdd or memory. One other thing could be that the sys is shuting down before it can write the cach to the hdd ,there is a patch at MS that will keep the sys on for couple more millsecond .

Hi

What dos scandisk did you use. If you used the dos version from win98, that should be no problem, however if you used one from an earlier dos which is not LFN compatible -- you could have trouble as a result.

Memtest86 is a good memory tester.

You have run the hard drive diagnostic. Good. This alone would suggest cabling and memory are ok.

This said, I suspect the version of scandisk is corrupt. Try booting with the 98 install disk and use the scandisk version there.

If you continue to find problems with scandisk, I'd move to looking at the partition tables both master and extended. There are some good programs to do this. Extended partition tables are something I'm not at all familiar with, but a number of member here are.

If you succeed fixing the scandisk or other problems, we can then move onto trying to restore the 98 boot process.

Hello everyone!
I have tried almost everyting on this machine. Every single test ran on it has passed.
Suddenly last night I discovered that the CPU had been misconfigured by somebody else.
Instead of being 233 MHZ it is actually a 266 MHZ, I fixed that. Now this PC is working fine.

Thanks to all for your responses!
