just bought perfect working compaq lte 5100 at yard sale for$5! want to upgrade to win 98se from win 95. can i just put in the win 98 disk and install or do i have to go thru the hoops that compaq recommends( flash bios, update audio& video drivers)? if you've done this please advise. Herb

I would update the BIOS. Before install make a note of all devices manufacturer name model number etc. If you can download drivers for the video card, soundcard and modem on another PC where you can burn a CD that might come in handy. At least backup the modem driver(you could at least download the other drivers later there should be at least a generic driver that will give you 16 color display on the win98 CD).
did the smart thing and upgraded the bios. audio&video drivers onboard win 98se. $5 laptop running like a champ. might even max out the ram. thanks for the reply. Herb
