Win 98 Dell Latitude Laptop - NO SOUND

I have a Dell Latitude Laptop with Win 98 running an IBM USB CD-ROM It was going fine until recently, but now no sound is playing from the laptop speakers. Everything appears to be working. I've checked that the sound volume is up; I can get the wav sounds to play through the speakers. Any help would be appreciated.

That happened to me more than once on my Dell Inspiron 7500. I don't know why it happened. But I used scanreg /restore and picked a date when sound was working, and I got it back. But that may not work for you.
