Hi I recently tried to instal Works 2000 over my Works 97 and the instal hung. on rebooting I discovered I had lost Win98.
The PC will go as far as loading the background but no icons or task bar or start button. Same in Safe mode.
Tried booting from Boot disk and tried to setup Win 98 from C, but it wont go as it advises "must get Win98 upgrade" as another operating system already on PC. Also tried setup of Win98SE from CD but same message.
I've been advised to reformat C but that sounds drastic when I can still see everything in Dos! Scandisk and Scanreg report no errors. Any suggestions would be welcome. Is this the blue screen of death thought it only applied to NT.
Is it possible that Works 2000 tried to load IE5 which I already had loaded?
I can boot in Dos only nothing available in Safe mode. I'm running Celeron 300 with 6gb Drive. Please help I've been at this a week and going nuts!

Just a suggestion but you can try deleting win.com from the root Windows directory. That should allow you to reinstall Win9x without the "upgrade" message.

Hit F8 on startup, chose Command Prompt only, type edit c:\windows\system.ini. change
[boot]
shell=;Explorer.exe
shell=progman.exe
Go to Run,type msconfig, go to the Startup tab and uncheck everything.

Either go back and change system.ini to the original or if you're comfortable using File manager, you can type Winfile under the File>Run and check your configuration files.
To open autoexec.bat, you go to the root of C: drive, highlight it, choose Run from the file menu and type notepad autoexec.bat

Hopefully this will get you back in.

Thanks ? Deleting Win.com still doesn't allow an instal of Win98SE - Error SU0168 still applies. Cannot find Setupx.dll in cabs in the Win98 SE CD to extract to fix it.
Thanks also Ironman28 copied Explorer.exe from Win 98SE CD to my PC but made no difference. Will try Reghakr's advice now.

Well I tried Reghakr's advice but all that happened after changing System.ini was the response cannot find ";Explorer.exe" Please reload Windows again from your CD. Tried booting it again without the ";" and still got the Blue Screen. So couldn't proceed further with his advice as would need Windows to be working to be able to run MSconfig. Thanks anyway. PC works perfectly in Dos. If I try typing Win at teh Dos prompt I get error messages cannot find Registry, followed by Xcache error then VFAT has failed. Running Scanreg/fix does not cure this. Any other suggestions would be very welcome.
