WIN-98 SE 4.10222A

The following boot error message occurs about midway thru the boot:

"Cannot find device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windos application.

The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this devive file but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or set up program.

If you still want to use this application, try installing that application to replace the missing file."

z:vvinesd.386
Press any key to continue

END ERROR MESSAGE

Problem:
1. What is name of program to which file "vvinesd.386" belongs?

2. What is purpose of this program?

3. If we cannor re-install this program, how do we get rid of the boot error message?

4. How to find and remove the reference to the missing file in the Windows registry?

Available info:

1. As far as we can determine, there are only
3 references to file "vvinesd.386" - all in the
file: C:\WINDOWS\INF\NETCLI3.INF.

2. The first reference is under the header:
[VINES.renfiles]
vines.bak,vines.drv (line 1)
vvinesd.bak,vvinesd.386 line 2)

END OF QUERRY

Thank you,
Nakorn

3. There is no reference to the file in
SYSTEM.INI.

I would seem that the file your error message is referring to is an old reference... and you need not be overly concerned. Have you perhaps deleted a program recently? Perhaps leaving a system file behind. Reinstalling, if known what specifically, and then subsequently removing again is only likely to correct a problem if removed properly (uninstallecd). In the meantime, removing the registry entry or perhaps running a Nortons utility may fix this for you.

Hi,

I already have meet this pb. I got this pb. I noticed that this error occurs when we install Oracle on the computer. To solve this pb, just follow the below instruction:

- Click on the Start button then Run
- Type regedit then Ok.
- Once under the Regedit Window, click on the menu Edit then Find. Type the string z:vvinesd.386 into the field Find What, then activate the option Data and Match whole string only and then press just Ok.
- When the key is located, just delete it simply, it does not cause any trouble for your computer functionning. Then reboot your computer so you will not see any more this msg.
