Comment:

I have an old computer on win 95 that crashes all the time. I think that
upgrading it to win 98se might solve a couple
of the problems I have with that machine.

The thing is that it has been a long time
since I've upgraded a win 95 machine and I don't remember if I can upgrade it with
the win98se cd (complete not upgrade) or
if I have to reformat it and everything that comes with that ???

Any memory ???

Thanks a lot,

Pat.

I always prefer a clean install over an upgrade.
Before you do:
1. Make sure you have a CDROM supported bootdisk, and a drive format utility like MaxBlast handy.
2. Download all of the drivers that you'll need - don't count on Windows to pick up on all of your devices. At the very least, make sure you have your modem driver so you can grab the rest off the Internet.
3. Do the installation by copying the whole Win98 directory to your hard drive, then run setup from there.
4. When running setup, type setup / ie /iv /is /nr - it speeds up the whole setup process by skipping Scandisk, Registry scan, banners and the Startup Disk.

Hope all of this helps.

I also prefer to reformat rather than upgrade, but to answer your question....yes you can.

I agree on the reformat. Much better results that way.

The answer yes you can was kind of off target as to the HOW TO.

If you want to install without formating rename win.com to win .old and run the install.

Can I run the install via a
network cdrom drive?

Pat, yes you can run it from a network CD-ROM, but you'd be better doing it this way instead (assuming that you have enough space on the HD):

Open Windows Explorer & copy the Win98 directory from the CD on the remote machine onto the C: drive. Then reboot with a Win98 bootdisk, choosing option 2..."Start My Computer Without CD-ROM Support." Navigate to the C:\Win98 directory and type:

Setup (ENTER)

This will GREATLY speed up the install process, & could eliminate many potential problems, such as low memory issues, read/write problems, etc.

HTH

Dave
