Will a Win98SE Full version CD upgrade Win98 first edition to Win98 Second Edition?
I doubt it but thought I'd ask. I don't have a Win98 SE upgrade disk but have a PC that I'd like to upgrade from First edition to second.
Thanks

I haven't tried this but have seen it several times and should work.
Rename Win.com to win.old. You can then use the full installation disc.

dont know about the upgrade(i dont see any reason why not)but if you formart your hard drive 98se will go on there

Let's see if I can answer your question without actually answering your question.
A few months ago I used the Win98SE Upgrade CD (that is for Win3.1 or Win95 (not Win98FE)) to upgrade my Win98FE to Win98SE. I had to run it from within Windows. When I ran it I got a message stating that an earlier version existed and did I want to continue. I selected Yes and all went fairly smooth. (it stalled at the hardware portion three times but just had to restart it each time in compliance with the instructions on the screen at the time of the error)
I lost nothing in the change. Of course I had to reinstall some drivers (eg. Modem, Souncard, Video along with DirectX)
So I suspect you may find a similar experience running the setup from within Windows instead of DOS or bootdisk.
I could very well be wrong though.

Don, I've used Smitty's method (renaming Win.com), and it worked just fine. Be sure to reboot with a bootdisk & run setup from DOS.
Bryco's method may work with an Upgrade CD, but it won't work with a Full-version CD.

Have you ever noticed that if you rearranged the letters in "mother in law", they come out to "Woman Hitler?"

I realize now that I wasn't specific enough in my question.
So, using Smitty's directions (rename Win.com to win.old) and using the full installation disk, will it upgrade without messing up or overwriting currently installed programs and data. That's the reason I'd like to avoid a normal full installation, so that we don't have to reinstall all non-windows software.
Thanks for the advice.

Don,
>will it upgrade without messing up or overwriting currently installed programs and data
Yes, your programs and data should all be safe, though you should go to the Windows Update Site after doing the upgrade, and (re)download all of the Critical Updates. Win98 First Edition and Win98SE don't use all of the same Updates, and reinstalling Windows will overwrite some of the newer files anyway.
