hello everyone, My computer started making wierd noises 2 days ago. It sounds like a really loud humming noise and some grinding. Sometimes the noise starts as soon as I turn the computer on, and sometimes it is fine for a few hours and then the noise starts up and starts to quiet down after a while. Anyone know what could be going on? Thanks

It's most likely one of the fans. Check the power supply fan first and then open it up and check the CPU fan.

Is this damaging to the computer? It doesn't seem to be affecting performance in any way.

It won't hurt the computer unless the fan quits. Determine whether it's the power supply fan or the processor cooling fan by slowing down the processor fan with a finger or by unplugging it BRIEFLY. If the noise stops, get a new fan. If it's the power supply fan, most can be disassembled and oiled with light oil with a little mechanical know how. Usually though, this will have to be repeated in a few months. Good luck.

The grinding noise from what you said makes it sound to me that the needle that reads your hraddrive disks might be touchin the disks....meaning your gunna need a new harddrive.

the HDD is not a record and neither does it have a "needle" it has a "Platter or Platters" and 'read head or heads'.
If the read head touches the platter, the drive is as they say - 'cactus'
