Why Shut Down?

Comment:
What is the purpose in shutting down the computer? Does it hurt it if I don't shut it down? Is it important?

I shut mine down every week or two. Tweaked properly, there's very little benefit to shutting off your W98 machine more often. I do, however, let the monitor power down after 30 mins. or so. I ain't rich!

Do you mean you let your computer run for all that time or do you just cut power to it?

I used to believe shutting down was worse than leaving it run. I now know why I would recommend (but not practice?) shutting down. If you do not have an alarm enabled (in the BIOS) to give an audible warning if the CPU exceeds safe operating temperatures, then you would be safer to SHUTDOWN if you are away from the PC. MHO, ciao Kevin

I don't have an alarm or anything but is it okay just to leave my PC on all day long and shut it down at night?

Shutting down also allows windows to clean up it's system a little before killing the power. Windows, like every other opperating system nowadays, uses Virtual Memory, it's somewhat important to allow windows to clear the swap files before you kill the power. Also, some programs residing within windows frown at closing without exiting the program first. Windows will exit the program for you when you select shutdown.
I have left my system on for months at a time without problems. However, if you are going to kill the power, it's a good idea to select shutdown from the menu.

Yes it's safe to leave it on all day and shutdown at night. I have been doing so for years now.

Will, I meant that I leave my PC on - powered up - 24/7.
The only advantage is I never have to wait to use it. It's ready to go when I am.
I turn the monitor off (actually, I have it set to power down after xx minutes of inactivity) to save $. Wouldn't leave your TV on all the time, would you?
