I've got what I think is a decent computer, which is by no means a hardcore gaming machine or anything like that, but I'm not getting the kind of performance from it that I think I should be. My 1.1 ghz duron just doesn't seem to be getting very good performance overall. I'm having trouble with getting mouse lag when using internet or even windows explorer, and I get very slow framerates when I try to play games as old as Half Life. I'm using a Geforce 2 mx with 64 megs of video ram, but I am only getting framerates of around 25-30 when I play Half Life, while I've seen the same game running with the same settings on much slower machines (800 mhz with 16 meg video ram) getting frame rates of 70 -80 fps.
The most worrisome thing however is the mouse lag I experience in windows. If anyone knows what could possibly be causing this sluggishness, then your help would be appreciated. Also note that I have tried shutting down all unnecessary programs, rebooting frequently, and checking for viruses, none of which seems to work.
Thanks,
Doofus

Doofus,
The things that could cause your problems you didn't address. Did this problem just start? Has it been like this since you bought it? Is is a factory built system or custom? How much ram does your system reconize? Was any hardware or software added prior to this slow down occuring?
1.1 is a respectable system and you should be ok with 256 ram.
You can e-mail me and i will help you walk thru some speed/tweak tips.

START> RUN> type in MSCONFIG & click OK.
Post back whats running, (you should do this at fresh boot) The #1 nuisance program i see causing lag-pc slowdowns is "LoadQM" you DO NOT need it, disable or delete it, you can do this in MSCONFIG's startup tab. Hope this helps, if you post back running tasks we can help further... A2Z

Darren, I feel that offering help be email is not appropriate on this board. All the users who contribit their help do so with the thought that the fixes and steps involved in fixing the varied problems posted here help other users and further educate themselves at the same time.
When inviduals start private email sessions, nobody else benefits from what may eventuate into a very helpful fix that may be referenced many times in the future.
