Hopefully someone can assist me in the reason I am having this problem! My computer freezes up only when I'm online, and not all the time it seems to freeze up more on heavy long sites similar to what a porno site page may be like!Oh and it also frequently freezes on msn chat pages! When it lock's up nothing accept for restarting the computer via the restart button on my tower work's! So in other word's pressing control/alt/delete does'nt do anything! What I have is a Tyan 1854 mother board, 256mb pc100 memory, window's 98 2nd edition, PacBell dsl with a external usb modem and BlackIce firewall ! I frequently keep up on my computer's maintenance up with Norton's System Work's 2001! So why is my computer locking up? note: No matter what when ever I go to that Browser-tune web site that pcpitstop recomends,it will freeze everytime! pcpitstop is a cool site that rates your computer via online for those who might not know about it. Ive also tried running just the bare min. to run windows and get online and it still freezes at no particular time

yo man...funny pic! not that you're funny, just that it was quite unexpected!
Anyway, try disabling Norton, i have know Norton to act-up from time to time.. If not try reinstalling your browser or maybe just upgrade it.

there are pretty much two different lockups that your computer will do. one is software, which could be from any application running at the time to fix this just figure out when your system started doing this and if you installed a prog that remains in memory or that wont run with any other app the second lockup is a hardware lock which is more than likley your cpu overheating. but it sounds like a software problem to me i personally dont think that norton apps work right anyway but that is from my experience.

This PCPitstop site you say locks you up.. it seems to run a program that looks into your computer, and tries to tweak the settings.
Things like that are why you have a firewall in the first place, to prevent people from doing that.
I'd put some heavy consideration into the thought that the site is actively trying to access your computer, and your firewall is actively trying to prevent it, and your antivirus is probably trying to prevent it, too.
Seems like a plausable cause for a lockup to me =)
Also, try the standard cleaning of the system, clear out your cookies and and your temporary internet files. Also set your browser to look for updated web pages to NEVER, and set your temp internet files space to 3-5 MB. You can do all of this in the Tools->Internet Options setting from the IE toolbar. Finally, consider clearing the stored info and passwords that are stored for the auto complete. You can to this at Tools-Internet options-Content tab, click on AutoComplete, and clicking the two CLEAR boxes.

Dave could be right,
I found this some time ago. You may want to try it;
Internet freeze? Rename Wsocks.Check for unwanted Wsock
(Use Find "Folder or Files" to look for Wsock.)
Type in Wsock
I kept Wsock32.dll &Wsock32n.dll and Wsock.VXD in my Windows\System
With Wsock2 I kept Wsock32.dll, Wsock32n.dll, mswsock.dll and Wsock2.VXD
And renamed all others oldwsockIf Windows will not let you rename a wsock
Saying"Windows is using this file can't rename"
This might be the cause of your Internet to freeze.
Windows should be using the wsock in your windows\systemBootup in safe-mode and rename the wsock to oldwsock
If you rename the wrong wsock just rename it back.

What kind of video card do you have? If it's an ATI card, lower your colors to 16bpp and try the sites that lock up. If that helps, do a search on this site for online or internet lockups. I posted info on that problem a few times.

TRY DELETE ITEMS FROM TEMP INTERNET FOLDER OR INCREASE ITS SIZE PORN SITE USE THIS FOLDER A LOT AND IT CAN BE ESILY OVERRUN CAUSING LOCK UPS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM

I recently had a computer with the same problem. Wracked my brain, tried everything I could think of. It finally turned out to be her Yahoo Messenger, got rid of that and no more trouble. If you have a messenger, it's worth a try.
good luck

Check both fans, over the processor and in the pc case. If the system gets too hot it will freeze, lol! And install system monitor so you can see what sites are taking all your resources and if they are the ones causing the problem.
Start, Programs, assessories, system tools, system monitor. Or you may to install it from your 98 cd.
