It is due to your 266 processor and and amount of ram that you have.

A 266MHz processor? Do you mean a 486DX2-66?

(big difference)

Ad-Aware runs quicker but what one program finds the other sometimes misses.

.. then you need to update your posted specs.

Spybot takes a while to run, although v1.3 is an improvement over its predecessor. By comparison, Ad-aware SE is blindingly fast. It's nice to have both, particularly if you're at risk (IE or OE user)

if you really run a 486 with 32mb ram as your specs say, then get used to any modern program running slow.
Dont install new software, run older versions designed for 486's.
When most people ran 386's, 486's were what people dreamed of. If you only run what was designed to run on your machine you will have a speed demon 486 with a whopping 32 MB ram.. a real pro's machine (circa 1990).

I installed X-Cleaner Free and the Sygate Personal Firewall. Is that good? How can I be sure that I am installing stuff designed for my PC?

Which one? The 486 or the Pentium 266MHz?

I wouldn't worry overly much - either something will run or it won't, with varying degrees of efficiency.

"Is that good?"

Well, if those programs do what you want, then that would be the main criterion. Research is never a bad idea - Sygate enjoys a good reputation. X-cleaner(?)... Never heard of it, but at least I don't see it listed here

Hi G1952
As you may now have gathered you machine was what Noah used.
Save up and invest in a new machine and it will take your breath away.
I buy a mag that people can buy and sell computers on and I have seen Pentium 3's 750mhz going for less than £150 which roughly equates to $80.

Really? I hadn't noticed.

Both you and XPUser are relative newcomers here @computing.net - have you grown bored with the XP forum?

Quotes are employed in an attempt to maintain clarity.

btw, I believe 150.00 GBP(£) = 269.864 USD($)!!

Historically, the British Pound has enjoyed a higher value than the US dollar
