Hi I had a huge problem with my computer freezing up, it has something to do with the ad banners.pennyweb.com. I FDISK and FORMATTED my computer after trying every spyware I could think of to get rid of it. I have AVG and Ad-Aaware SE on my computer at all times but neither of them caught this ad. After doing the format I reinstalled windows98 SE no problems then when I downloaded IE6 SP1,my AVG the virus scan ran came up with nothing as I was trying to download Ad-Aware SE the same AD popped up again banners.pennyweb.com also I couldn't finish downloading Ad-aware SE a error pops up cannot find MSIEXEC files and my computer still freezes up and jams I know it sounds like a virus to me but I thought that by FDISKING and FORMATTING I would of got rid of it. I also tried search and destroy it did not find this ad. I would appreciate any help with the solution for this if anyone has one or is it possible the hard drive could be gone I had the computer since it was new its not now but still in good shape for the internet. The only person that has used it was my niece this past 2 months she is only allowed on kids site I approve so I don't know where it came from. Thank you suzieQ

Are you behind any type of firewall? A hardware router works well. Are you updating AdawareSE and Spybot S&D? Additionally, Spybot has an immunize feature.
I think you got re-infected after your re-install.

Hi Dave I went to a mocrosoft site I had got here from an old answer. Can you tell me why Dave I got the same ad back after 2 fdisks and 2 formats? How do I get the MSIEXEC files its says it has something to do with the windows installer although I don't know why the only different thing I did was use a new start up disk which I got from the windows98 Add/remove area and I copied the format to it. Please help I have been working on it for 2 weeks now I will try anything. thank you suzieQ
PS: haven't been here for a while glad to see your still here DAVE IN CAPS

I agree with Othehill.

I would suggest another fdisk/format/install. Then the very first thing to do (before going online) is install a firewall. I suggest Zonealarm.

Some viruses could contaminate a bootdisk and then reinfect the hard drive later on. But I don't see some simple popup going to all that trouble. So you must have gotten it after the installation. Did you have any problems with the IE download?

It's not likely a regular virus scan is going to catch malware like that. You might try downloading Hijackthis:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3...

It would probably show what's calling the ad.

I don't know about msiexec.exe. It doesn't seem to be on the 98 cd so one would assume it would be part of the download that needed it. I have a version dated from 2002 on mine but I don't know what software installed it. I could email it if you want to try it. But as already mentioned, reformatting and reinstalling may be the way to go.

Hi me again, well I fdisk and formatted my computer this is what I did in order because the same error came up which prevents me from downloading Ad-Aware SE and I always had Ad-Aware no problem. It comes up 'cannot complete setup of Ad-Aware MSIEXEC files missing'. 1.Set up my Internet 2.Downloaded IE6 SP1 from microsoft site. 3. Downloaded the same graphic driver from Intel. 4.Updated from windows update and then I tried to download the Ad-Aware and can't. I also tried to check my mail SAME MESSAGE. File Name-blank.js
File type: JScript Script File
From: banners.pennyweb.com
Now I am lost that is the 3rd time I fdisk and formatted I don't know where else to go the hijack won't work because of the MSIEXEC missing files please help me, thank you suzieQ

Is it the download itself that is failing or are you able to download it but can't install it?

I notice they've got a new version of adaware--Adaware 2007. Is that what you're downloading? Maybe the problem is with this newer version.

Try uninstalling the IE you downloaded. Try IE 5.5 SP2 instead. I use this download:

http://www.citynet.net/supportdownl...

Running the download creates a WIN32 folder containing an EN folder. Open that and run IE5SETUP.EXE.

I can send you the msicexec file as well as the older adaware if you need it.

It's likely some of the missing files are visual basic files. You can download the upgrade here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...

I'll send the adaware in a couple hours.

Hi Dave me again I am ready to give it up or throw it away I downloaded the msiexec files you sent I got the same response as when I tried to download some before this is what it say's
Windows Installer Incorrect line parameters
Version V 2.00.2600.
microsoft corporation
portions of this software are based in part on the work of the Independant JPEG Group.
I know it has to do with images for a lack of a better word when I try to open a photo or even a web site I get an all white screen a few minutes later the page might show but as for the pictures in my email it goes to cannot detect network settings until I refresh it. I can't grasp it at all I format and worked on this computer for over 5 years never ran into a problem. I appreciate all you help but I am at a loss now and don't know what to do I guess I will have come up with the money to have it sent in to a computer shop more like a hack shop, god I hate giving them my money LOL. thanks again Dave for your troubles I'll keep plugging along and if I ever get it fixed I will let you know suzieQ

It's possible the msiexec.exe was the wrong version for the software you were installing.

You might try formatting and reinstalling, skip the IE update until later, and see if the older adaware will install.

Do you have Windows Installer installed? I don't think it's already installed on a 98 fresh install. I don't think you can install the MSIEXEC files without the Windows Installer.

You can download it here:

I'm wondering, is it an ad that's popping up, suggesting you buy something or directing you to a website, or could it just be a message that doesn't make any sense? Maybe some of software you've installed needs a file it can't find and that's its obscure way of telling you.

Hi suzieQ, DAVEINCAPS, OtheHill, max00, RWD1996, hi everyone

From what I have seen at Spyware Warrior Forums, ASAP* member, while I did a search for banners.pennyweb.com, it seems to be related to a obscure randomly named no*.dll file in the Windows (sub)folders.
