My Trackman II mouse uses a Logitech adapter to connect to my serial port. I'd like to get a mouse that doesn't have to be cleaned all the time. But, I can't find an optical mouse that uses a serial port. I've been to the Logitech web site, but I can't figure out whether they have an upgrade that uses a serial port. Can you make a recommendation?

Judy,

What you could do is buy one of the optical mice, and then also go to any office supply store and buy a converter that goes from PS/2 to Serial ports. then you should be ok.

I have a Logitech cordless optical mouse. The transmitter can connect to either USB or an adapter that allows connection to the PS/2 port. In fact, that is the way mine is connected. If you should go this direction, I suggest you consider the one with rehargable batteries. I have the one that uses regular "AA" cells and I have to change them about once a month. Pain in the patoot. Check it out on the Logitech web site.

If you need to use an adapter, buy the mouse with an adapter. All adapters do not work with all mice. There is not a standard.

Just to be clear, the USB/PS2 adapter came with the Logitech mouse discussed in response #1.

I'm confused. My serial port already has a Logitech adapter for a ps/2 port. The trackman II (which I've had forever) has a ps/2 connector that fits into the adapter which fits into the serial port. I bought a Logitech Optical mouse and tried to use the same adapter, but it didn't work. The logitech web site says that their optical mice don't work in serial ports. Furthermore, the optical mouse did not come with a serial port adapter. So, please explain the responses above. I already have an adapter that is not sending power to the optical mouse.

The logitech cordless optical mouse I have comes with a transmitter which has a USB connector on the cable. It also has an adapter that fits onto the USB connector and plugs into the PS/2 port on the back of the PC tower. I'm not aware of a connection alternative to a serial post. There is nothing on the Logitech site with a serial port connection. They are all USB or PS/2.

Sorry, I missed the whole question relative to the serial port hookup. I guess I just assumed you meant the PS/2 port. Just muddied up some already muddy waters.

PS You do have a PS/2 port on your PC... Right?

No, I don't have a PS/2 port. I think that's what is so confusing. My current Logitech mouse is connected to a serial port via an adapter (one side is the serial port, the other side is the PS/2 port).

My computer has been updated and rebuilt numerous times over the last 10 years. The last time I had it upgraded, the guy told me that I couldn't go any further. But, it's pretty fast and has decent memory.

So, back to the original question. Am I SOL? I can keep using my Trackman II. It works fine. I'm just tired of cleaning it every couple of days.

I suggest you contact Logitech about your problem. There is an e-mail contact for tech support on their web site. Be sure to include info about your configuration and the fact you have no PS/2 port. In fact, it would be prudent to give them all the info you can about your PC. Make, model processor, RAM, etc, etc. You never know, they have been in the mouse business a long time. Could be something as simple as an updated driver to make your existing serial post adapter work with a new mouse.
Best Luck - Ray
