I suggest buying a copy of Computer Shopping magazine. I believe all of their advertisers are legitimate.

I have mine built by a local reliable shop with only
what I want on it rather than buy a name brand computer
with all the prepackaged software.

There are lots of good shops out there...
I'd go with a 100% compatible clone pc. They are easier to upgrade than, let's say, an IBM, which I think is crap.
I hate that commercial that says "do u really want a clone?"
I say YES
Clones are good cause you can pick exactly what you want...
If you want a name brand, go with Dell.

I pefer to buy my system from the local computer shop,(not store) because I can talk a better deal "peferred customer" and lets me In, he is my number uno supplier, of computer related componets, he's usually working on 7 systems at a time, yes it is a one man operation, that has its benifeits, because he lets say I need a motherboard with 4 isa and 4pci slots, he can get me it for 50$ no bull. I like that, helped me out when I was looking for a "backup copy" of windows nt now I got that for 5.15 ha! and he can order software for me like lets say PARTITION MAGIC which rocks. at cost.period..

but BE VERY CAREFUL, there are idiots out there that WILL rip you off! ex. a small computer buisness was selling 486 isa mobos with the 33mhz processor for 30-50 bucks man that crazy, and a adapter that adapts a 9pin serial to a 29 pin 15$ ouch, I could buy that for 5 bucks so there is a differnce in local computer shops, eeehh what really killed me was buying a 1 gig for 89 bucks! should of bought a 10 gig for that price!

I suggest doing a lot of reading first. I spent two years learning about the components before I bought a system I had put together. I know that is a little anal retentive but at least get and idea of not just the processor, but size of drives, sound card, video card, modem, memory, cd-rw, dvd, etc, case size, motherboard, fans, power supply, etc. Planning helps decrease immediate upgrades, as well as gives you a unit that will do what you want it to, whether it is off the shelf or made up.
