When i start the computer it says detecting primary IDE and slave it says none. Then when it detect the secondary there is. But i'm sure the secondary one is only my cd rom drives. and then when i try to put in the windows 98se startup disk and run fdisk it says that there is no fixed disk available. and then i try to format the hardrive it says format not supported. and i think i need the dos 6.22 setup disk or any dos that will work with windows 98se, because i've read a couple forum that i need to install the dos into the drive. please HELP ME> all help will be greatly appreciate.....

yes i tried that and when i try to format it says that format is not supported and when i run fdisk it says there is no fix disk. any copy of dos setup diskete that works with win98se will be apriciated send to verycuteasian@yahoo.com also please all advice is welcome!!!!!!

You need to get into the bios and see if the hard drive is recognized. Most bios need you to hit the delete key while the machine is booting up. Most likely the drive needs to be Auto detected in bios before you can fdisk and format anything. The boot disk installs the dos programs you need. If the hard drive isn't recognized you may have a bad drive.

yeah i have tried to auto detect but it doesn't detect any it says none but the secondary ide detects something i dont know if it just the cd rom drive or something. but please at least send me a copy of dos setup disk that works with windows 98se .... i really need it just for a try!!! thanks

Hi everyone,
As jcsh54 stated you first need to ensure the bios recognizes the hard drive.
If it does not then no software is going to help.Once the bios recognizes the hard drive you will then need a Win98 bootdisk as stated by Max, not any "dos setup diskete" will work.
Go into the bios settings and select Auto for the Primary Master and Slave. Do the same for the Secondary Master and Slave.
Good Day!
Mesich

yes i have tried that and it only detect secondary then when i put in the 98se startup disk and run fdisk it says that no fixed disk and when i try to format it says format not supported

Hi verycuteasian, hello everyone,
If the bios is not detecting the hard drive you need to check the cables going from the motherboard to the hard drive.
Go here
to get a bootdisk for Win98, but it will not help in partitioning or formatting the hard drive until the bios recognizes it.Mesich

Hi again all,
when i put in the 98se startup disk and run fdisk it says that no fixed disk
That is because the bios has not detected the hard drive, therefore fdisk does not see a fixed disk.
when i try to format it says format not supported
Once again, until the bios sees the hard drive you cannot format it.
Mesich

I really appriciate that everyone is trying to help and i have also tried checking the cables and it is securely attach please more advice is still welcome also i'm still looking for dos setup disk

It appears you don't believe the advice given. If the bios does not recognize the hard drive, then NO program will help. A DOS setup disk is NOT required for Win98. You could have a motherboard IDE controller failure. I suggest you follow Mesich's advice.

Hi Cutie, Hi Mesich, Hi all
Mesich, you'd better grab a Corona.
verycuteasian...you gotta listen to jcsh54 and Mesich. Your machine does not know it has a hard drive. You didn't tell us what cpu/memory you have but it sounds like it's an older machine. If you can tell us the make/model of your computer or motherboard it would be a big help.
If it is an older motherboard you may need to set the hard drive parameters manually so bios will "see" it and as jcsh54 mentioned; you could just have a failed hard drive.
See if you can get us some information and post back asap as Mesich's about ready to eat supper and he might want to take a nap.
Skip

Open the case again and post back the model # of the HD and as much info on the system as you can, as SkipCox suggests.
It's possible the primary IDE controller isn't enabled in cmos. This is separate from identifying it as AUTO or whatever.
Another possiblity is you've got a drive that's too big for your bios to see. Is this a new drive?
And with a moniker like 'verycuteasian' I think a photo is required.

Oh, he's just kidding, we'll help you anyway. But next time if you used something like 'wrinkledoldlady' you probably keep the perv's at bay.

Anyway sonny, if you can perhaps read what's printed on your hard drive, it would be a big help.
