I'd like to install a Pop-Up Blocker on my dad's PC.

Can you recommend a solid, system-friendly freeware program that he can use to stop all of those nasty Pop-Ups?

I've installed Spyware blaster, Spy-Bot, and Ad-Aware, so he's got protection from those applications.

I'd like to give him additional protection from Pop-Ups.

Many thanks, in advance, for you help and recommendations.

Well, for what it's worth, i use no ad blocker, no virus software, no firewall. I don't get any pop ups unless it's specific to the site. I believe the reason is the windows updates are doing their job. One that has helped, is in 'internet properties advanced, check 'clear temporary folder on exit of explorer'. I run adaware, and generaly have no entries. And yes i do surf around no man's land occasionally. The key to internet life and a clean computer, is not to download everything you see. If i do go on kazaa and download a virus, i simply goe to "trend micro housecalls", use their virus encyclopedia, and they tell me how to get rid of it. I run into maybe 1 or 2 a year and i know why. i'm downloading software. Anyway, stay current with windows updates and stop downloading things unless you realy think you need it. if you get a site that starts hiting you with pop ups, close your browser, and delete all cookies and temp files. I know you dont want to delete al your cookies, but maybe you can selectively delete them or save the ones you need as a copy in another folder. 98se user.

FWIW, I'm referring to pop-ups that are "specific to the site".

This
is a good one. An even better solution is to dump Internet Explorer and use Opera instead.

Turn your third party cookies off in IE. XPSP2 has the popup blocker but it doesn't look like the old OS 98 / ME will get it.

On the IE toolbar, go to

Tools/Internet Options/Privacy/Advanced/

Overide Automatic cookie Handeling - Turn Off Third Part Cookies.

You will be surprised at the results. Only one site I know that will not work after that change. AOL or Netscape Webmail

Pop Up Stopper is one, and a better option is the Google toolbar which has a pop-up stopper built in. It has the advantage of giving you google search box without having to visit the homepage.

The Google toolbar is a form of spyware. Scroll down & read 1 thru 9:

If you use a browser other than IE, you won't need a special popup blocker. Try FireFox:

jam,

Very good points.

I've been using Mozilla since Netscape 4 pooped out and the later versions had elephantitis.

I tried FireFox, but the download mgr was goofy.

I discovered google-watch a few years ago and I figured, if there's that much smoke there must be at least a little fire.

Just for drill I wrote a bat to grep out the google cookies. When I get to it the next version will do a mystery marination. Just to mess with them.

Google toolbar is not necessarily spyware.

For more on this topic read the section titled "Is The Google Toolbar Spyware?" here

The Google Toolbar has been accused of being spyware because it includes a Page Rank feature that tells Google where people are surfing on the Web. The Page Rank feature on the Google Toolbar can be disabled if you want to enjoy the benefits without any stealthy activity.

On the other hand this may scare you off. The choice is yours.

I use google but do NOT enable the advanced features.

If you are paranoid then the freeware version of popup stopper from panicware is a good alternative. You can get it from here.

My favorite "pop-up blockers" are Mozilla, Opera, Firefox, and Lynx. ;) Ever since I learned to disable Javascript in the Netscape Communicator days, I haven't seen a pop-up since Geocities started that crap in 1998. :)
