ok i just got a new job with my city and i'm mostly doing autocad stuff, the computer i'm on isn't connected to the main network, which is very very nice.
anyway on the care there is the intel inside logo for a P4 on an asus MotherBoard. now i'm pretty positive that's not what's inside and when i go to the system properties it says this.... x86 Family 15 Model 0 Stepping 7....... what the heck does that mean?
is this a 486 type proccesor, help me i just want to know.
thanks

Why are you "Pretty positive" you don't have a P4? When the machine POSTS what does it show the processor as? And, just a little note here... if you're running Autocad, I'd recommend at least 256 MB of RAM.

If your running windows 98 on a P4 it wont show the proper CPU in the system properties.
The P4 was released way after windows 98 there for windows 98 would not be programed to display the CPU info properly.
I do believe the Family 15 CPUs are P4's.
What ASUS motherboard is in the PC?
Check the BIOS settings for CPU and MoBo info.
If at first you dont fix it, Try harder!

Johns3, System properties doesn't show the CPU speed anyway. And just because the chip came out later then the OS doesn't mean it's going to show incorrectly.

Best program to determine CPU is Intel Processor Frequency ID Utility 4.00. Download from ..

Thi will tell you everything you'll need to know about your processor.
Good luck,
Sandor

Tom you may want to do some research such as install windows 98 on a old Pentium 75 or somthing like that.
You will find it will show the CPU as a Pentium (r), it wont show the speed but it will show the type.
I guess I should change my tag at the bottom to... Dont Flame me till you try it.

That's strange actually Intel was going to call it's pentium 1 computers 586s and the P2 686s(BTW some books refer to them as that)therefore a P4 is an 886 (or a souped up 486 as they all are)

Yeah, Intel started naming their cpu lines to distinguish their chips from other manufacturer's generic equivalents. AMD had 586 and I believe 686 but now everyone is naming their cpus.

thanks for all the suggestions, i'll go try them right now, another CAD tech built this machine at least he got the monitor right (Viewsonic 21") anyway if this is a P4 im going to have to ask him why hell there is only 128mbs of ram. oh well it's out of my hands, it's only a summer job i could really care less.
