Hi Guy's. What is the best register cleaner to download, I think I need to clean mine out of the rubbish I have collected. Thanks.

Perhaps ad-aware from lavasoft? It's a program to check your computer from ad-ware, spy-ware, and cleans the register to.

Rudi's right. I too use ad-aware. But I think RegCleaner is also a good one. You can download it at
http://download.com.com/3000-2094-10115517.html?tag=lst-0-5

Adaware is a good ad cleaner, I use it but it is not a registry cleaner, it looks for specific ad type files and gives you the option to delete them. I use regcleaner, not the Microsoft one which is not that great but per the site below, which gives you the option to delete or do and automatic clean, and also allows for backup.See site below

I agree that people should use registry cleaners, so much so that I added these notes to the upcoming Delindex 4.2:
It's as important to remove junk from your registry as it is from your hard drive. If you don't use a registry cleaner, your registry will be bigger; it will have obsolete and erroneous entries; and it's more likely to cause errors. With any cleaner, do NOT delete "duplicate" files! From http://winguides.com/downloads.php?guide=registry:
Example: I deleted a read.me file, and WinDoctor found an invalid registry entry, and had about 30 "solutions" which were to point to other read.me files, none of which were correct. The very last option was to delete the invalid entry!
• EasyCleaner (free; WARNING: it WILL disable Help UNLESS you put HELP in the "skip" box; also add _RESTORE, CONTROL)
• MS RegClean (free; may cause problems with WinMe on SOME systems, but not mine)
Others:
• System Mechanic ($60; iolo.com)
• Norton WinDoctor (in Utilities & NSW; choose your own repair; most times it's best to delete invalid entries).
• Remove some of your history with List Zapper (free; PCMagazine.com)
• See http://computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/20552.html
• Fix Registry cleaning problems with the cleaner's undo function, or type scanregw /restore in Start/Run or at a DOS prompt.=====
I use all 4 of these Registry Cleaners, and each can find something the other can't.

I have and use RegCleaner, and have used the same author's jv16 PowerTools. In RegCleaner, I use the first screen only; Power Tools caused a major disaster because clicking on X to close one of the functions resulted in execution of the function anyway! So newbies and experienced users alike should be very careful about these two.

Just to give you an example of junk in the registry, consider this:
I stopped using AOL quite some time ago, but kept the files on my computer because I hadn’t transferred “favorites” from AOL to Internet Explorer. Well, I finally uninstalled it. Then I used a program to find all references to “AOL” and “America Online” in the registry and there were over 300 references after it was uninstalled! I used several registry cleaners; I checked again; there were still over 70 references. I found instructions on how to remove AOL leftovers and found over 38MB of files that were still undeleted! The moral: if you think deleting or uninstalling a file or program removes all files (or references to them in the registry), think again. The fault (in this instance, IMHO) is due both to AOL and MS Windows. No wonder Windows is so screwed up; keeping references to files and programs that no longer exist corrupts the registry, and is essentially the same as a book that has an index to pages that don’t exist!

If you don't know that what you want to clean is the "registry" and not a "register," I think you should be VERY careful and cautious!

There are many RegCleaners, and as noted, the MS one doesn't do much, if anything. The best one Ive found ishere: www.jv16.org and is spelled Registry Cleaner, because that's what it dows, and to avoid copying MS. I ahve never had ANY problems with it on 98 1st edition. And all the commands work and it's FREE. All plusses. Good luck.

Just to add a couple of cents to your informative post #5.
The EasyCleaner Help file problem does not exist on W95 & W98 (I've used it on both). If I recall it correctly it is only a problem on Windows ME.
I do use Norton WinDoctor but as you said the solutions offered are frequently quite wild. If, for example, there is a duff link to a setup.exe file it will suggest the first one it finds - dandy! And you are right again, the trick is to NEVER let Norton do any "automatic" repair. Always opt to select from the suggested solutions yourself, and then switch on brain.
